Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Jeff Dragicevich hit an eighth-inning grand slam to give Colorado Springs a 6-0 cushion, and the Sky Sox defeated New Orleans 6-0 in front of 5,883 fans at Security Service Field Friday.
The Sky Sox were already ahead 2-0 in the eighth inning thanks to two run-scoring swings by Jayson Nix. The Olympic second baseman hit into a 6-4-3 double play in the third inning that allowed Mike McCoy to score the game's first run. Nix later plated McCoy again with a sacrifice fly in the Sky Sox five-run eighth inning.
Franklin Morales (7-4) continued his dominance at Security Service Field. The Rockies' top prospect allowed no runs in 6 2/3 innings before yielding the ball to Matt Daley. Morales has now allowed just nine runs in 34 1/3 innings, good for a 2.43 ERA.
New Orleans starting pitcher Ruddy Lugo matched Morales pitch-for-pitch despite falling to 7-9 on the season. Lugo's line don't do him justice as he tossed seven brilliant innings before running into trouble in the seventh inning. He left with two outs in the inning and the bases loaded. Eddy Camacho relieved him and promptly served up the grand slam to Dragicevich. Three of the runs were charged to Lugo.
The home run was the second for Dragicevich since joining the Sky Sox on July 19. The new Sky Sox addition, playing in his seventh game, is now hitting .417 with six RBI and is on a six-game hitting streak
Cedrick Bowers picked up the save after pitching the eighth and ninth innings. He allowed one run.
The Sky Sox have now won 14-consecutive games when hitting a home run, 12 of those coming at home.
Colorado Springs plays host to Oklahoma City Saturday, the first game of a four-game set. Josh Towers (5-6, 5.78) will get the start for the home team while Tommy Hunter (1-2, 2.96) will toe the hill for the RedHawks.
