Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Tucson, AZ - A big first inning and a Micah Hoffpauir grand slam helped Iowa get past Tucson 15-7 on Thursday night.

Iowa jumped to a big lead scoring a total of 8 runs in the first two innings of the game. Andres Torres started the first inning with a triple and was brought in by a Felix Pie line drive single. A Bobby Scales RBI single and Koyie Hill 2 RBI double rounded out the first inning. In the second Hoffpauir hit his grand slam to over the right field fence to make it an 8-1 ball game.

Tim Raines, Jr. hit a solo home run in the first inning to give Tucson their first run of the ballgame. Tucson followed Iowa's trend and scored four runs of their own in the third. Three of the runs came off a home run by Josh Whitesell that went over the green monster at Tucson Electric Park. The next batter, Jesus Merchan, hit a triple down the left field line and was brought in by Donnie Kelly.

The Cubs extended their lead in the fourth when Pie was driven in by a Casey McGehee line drive base hit. With runners at first and third and one out, Bobby Scales struck out as Casey McGehee broke for second. McGehee was able to get caught in a run down long enough for Micah Hoffpauir to score from third for the Cubs tenth run of the game. Iowa put up a total five more insurance runs in the seventh and ninth innings.

Tucson had bases loaded in the seventh with no outs and was able to bring in two runs. A Robby Hammock single to center scored Raines and Whitesell was able to come home off a fielder's choice for the second run of the inning, but it wasn't enough to give Tucson their fourth straight win.

The Sidewinders will face the Iowa Cubs in the last game of their four game series starting at 7:00 PM on Friday night. RHP Esmerling Vasquez (1-5, 7.11) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Justin Berg (4-5, 5.73) will start for the Cubs. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50 p.m.
