Sky Sox Rally Past Zephyrs in Ninth

June 6, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth inning and defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs, 2-1 on Monday night.

New Orleans had held the Sky Sox scoreless through the first 22 innings of the series until the late rally, which ended the Zephyrs' bid for a season-best five-game win streak.

With the Zephyrs nursing a 1-0 lead into the ninth, Craig Breslow issued a leadoff walk to Garin Cecchini. One out later, Manny Pina doubled over the head of right fielder Kenny Wilson to score Cecchini with the tying run.

The Z's turned to Eric Joksich, who got one out before Michael Reed lifted a fly ball into the right field corner which Wilson appeared to overrun, allowing Reed to coast into second with a go-ahead double.

New Orleans put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Sam Freeman induced a broken-bat ground out from Elliot Soto to end the game and pick up his first save.

After both teams were held to one hit apiece through six innings, the Zephyrs finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the seventh. Isaac Galloway tripled against the wall in right-center field with two outs, and scored when Brady Shoemaker laced a single up the middle.

The Sky Sox were primed to rally in the top of the eighth, loading the bases against Breslow with one out before Breslow struck out Keon Broxton and got Yadiel Rivera to bounce back to the box to escape the jam.

Chris Narveson stifled the Sky Sox to one hit through seven scoreless frames but did not factor into the decision as Breslow (0-2) suffered the blown save and loss.

Damien Magnifico (1-4) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to get the win for the Sky Sox, who used five pitchers on the night.
