Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES - The Memphis Redbirds (23-32) used back-to-back, two-run innings and 12 hits to down the Iowa Cubs (28-27) 6-2, Monday night at Principal Park. The loss snapped Iowa's nine game winning streak, the team's longest since 1991.

Drew Rucinski (4-5) got the ball for Iowa and after tossing five one-run innings, was chased with two outs in the sixth after allowing a run to score and putting runners on the corners. He ended the game with three runs, two earned, seven hits allowed, three walks and five strikeouts to take the loss.

The I-Cubs were limited to a season-low three hits with Willson Contreras taking credit for two of them to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

Memphis struck first as a walk, stolen base and an error put the leadoff man, Charlie Wilson, on third to begin the game. Jose Martinez brought in Wilson on a groundout to Arismendy Alcantara to give the Redbirds a 1-0 lead.

Daniel Vogelbach helped Iowa to its lone offense of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Contreras walked and Vogelbach drove a shot over the wall in right-center to boost Iowa into the lead.

The Redbirds responded in the top of the sixth with two runs of their own and followed with two more in the seventh to put Memphis ahead, 5-2. The visitors added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to snap a four-game skid.

Deck McGuire (4-6) was on the bump for the Redbirds and tossed five innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out six Iowa batters.

Iowa and Memphis meet for the final game of the series, Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park. First pitch is set for 12:08 p.m. with promotions including BIGS Baseball Bingo. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
