Sky Sox Fall to El Paso 7-4 in Front of Record Setting Crowd

On a night when the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (53-85) set a new franchise single-season attendance record, the team fell to the El Paso Chihuahuas (67-71) by the score of 7-4. A raucous crowd of 7,630 fans took in the Tuesday night game, helping the club set a new season record with a total of 344,523 fans with one more home game still left to be played. The previous record of 339,009 was set back in 2011.

El Paso started the scoring in the second inning with a pair of runs scored on RBI singles by Jace Peterson and Jeff Francoeur.

The Sky Sox cut the lead quickly to 2-1 though as they answered in the bottom half of the inning on a Rafael Ynoa RBI double. Ynoa would finish the game 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles to give him a team-leading 30 on the season.

Colorado Springs kept it close until the sixth when El Paso took advantage of two costly errors by Angelys Nina and Cristhian Adames to score four runs, just one earned, to take a 6-1 lead. All six runs came against Sox starter Jair Jurrjens (0-4) who was tagged with the loss.

Ben Paulsen cut the lead to 6-2 in the seventh when he led off the inning with a solo homer to right, his 20th of the season. It is the first time in Paulsen's career that reached the 20-homer plateau. His previous high of 19 came back in 2011 with Tulsa.

The Chihuahuas got the run back in the eighth on a lead-off homer by Cody Decker, his 24th of the year.

The Sox would try and rally in the ninth and did score a pair of runs on a passed ball and a RBI groundout but it wouldn't be enough as El Paso closed it out.

Joe Wieland (1-1) picked up the win for El Paso after working 6.1 innings and giving up two runs on five hits, while walking one and striking out three.

The home finale of the 2014 season is set for tomorrow night with the Sky Sox looking to avoid the sweep. RH Chad Bettis (3-3, 2.70) will take the mound for the Sox against lefty knuckleballer Jason Lane (8-9, 4.67). Game time is set for 6:35 PM.
