Sky Sox Edge the Beavers, 3-2

September 1, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox won their second straight contest as they edged the Portland Beavers by the score of 3-2 on Tuesday evening at Security Service Field in front of 5,492 fans.

Sox starter Esmil Rogers (2-5) bounced back from a few rough outings in his previous two starts to turn in a solid night on the mound. He picked up his first win in almost two months after giving up just two runs on five hits over 5.2 innings while walking four and striking out four. Rogers used three double plays early in the game to escape damage before giving up two runs in the sixth and leaving with a runner on second and two outs. Damian Moss came on to induce a groundout to work out of the inning and turned in 1.1 scoreless innings of work. Matt Belisle tossed the final two innings to notch his seventh save of the season.

The Sox got all the offense they would need on the night in the fifth off of starter Josh Geer (2-5). Christian Colonel led off the inning with a single before Sal Fasano doubled to put runners at second and third with no one out. Jonathan Herrera delivered a two-run single to put the Sox up 2-0 and one out later Matt Miller drove in his 94th run of the season with a fielder's choice groundout.

Game three of the four-game series is set for a 6:05 PM start tomorrow night with RH Russ Ortiz (0-1, 5.40) taking the hill for the Sox versus LH Cesar Ramos (4-5, 3.72).

GAME NOTES: With their win tonight, the Sox Magic Number to clinch the division is down to six and could drop to five if the Tacoma Rainiers were to lose to the Salt Lake Bees.
