Sky Sox Defeat Aces 6-2 for First Win of the Season

April 6, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

For the second straight night, Nolan Arenado hit a home run and helped lead the Sky Sox (1-1) over the Reno Aces (1-1) by the score of 6-2 in front of 5,313 fans for their first win of the season.

After pitcher Tyler Chatwood made quick work of the Aces in the top of the first, outfielder Charlie Blackmon led off the bottom half of the inning with a single. With DJ LeMahieu at the plate Blackmon stole second and then advanced to third on a pick-off attempt throwing error by starter Chase Anderson (0-1). LeMahieu ended his at-bat by lining out to the shortstop, but Ryan Wheeler managed to get the run home with a sacrifice fly to Aces' center fielder Tony Campana.

Both teams made it out of the second inning without getting on the board, but the Aces were able to manufacture their first run of the game in the top of the third and tie the game. Catcher Ed Easley lead off with a single, his first of four singles on the night, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Anderson. He then took third on a wild pitch by Chatwood and later crossed the plate on a RBI single by shortstop Chris Owings.

The Sox regained the lead in the fourth at 2-1 after Ryan Wheeler reached on a fielding error by Mark Teahen and later scored on Corey Dickerson's sacrifice fly.

The Sky Sox' brief lead ended the next inning when Kila Ka'ahiue scored on a ground ball off of new pitcher Rob Scahill (1-0). The former Sky Sox starter came in for Chatwood after the right-hander allowed two straight singles. After giving up the RBI single to Taylor Harbin, Scahill shutdown the Aces and did not allow a run over the next three innings to earn the win.

With the game tied at two in the fifth, LeMahieu singled home Blackmon to give the Sox a 3-2 advantage that they wouldn't relinquish. They added to their lead in the sixth when Arenado doubled to lead off and scored on a Matt McBride double. McBride crossed the plate two batters later on a fielding error by Reno third baseman Matt Davidson to push the lead to 5-2. Arenado's towering home run in the seventh extended the team's lead to four at 6-2.

Josh Sullivan came in the ninth and shut the door on the Aces' offense and preserve the Sky Sox first win of the season.

Colorado Springs will look to win their second straight game of the season tomorrow, when they face the Aces again in the two teams' first day game of the year. First pitch is scheduled at 1:35 p.m. and will feature Sky Sox left-hander Drew Pomeranz against Aces' righty Charles Brewer.
