Chicago Sky News Release
CHICAGO - The Chicago Sky is winding down their inaugural season, but not before locking in a two-year deal with forward Brooke Wyckoff. Wyckoff, a free agent, will stay with the Chicago Sky throughout the 2008 season and is residing in Chicago during the off-season to work with the team on community relations efforts.
Wyckoff was acquired from the Connecticut Sun during the WNBA expansion draft. She appeared in the first 15 games for the Chicago Sky before suffering a right thumb fracture in the June 30 game against Charlotte. She averaged 23 minutes and 3.3 points per game.
"Signing Brooke is a significant step for us," said President and CEO Margaret Stender. "She is one of our key building blocks for the future."
Wyckoff was drafted 26th overall in the 2001 WNBA draft from Florida State University by the Orlando Miracle, which later became the Connecticut Sun. She had an impressive first season with Connecticut, finishing 4th in rebounding and 11th in assists per game among rookies. In 2002, she was second on the team in blocks with 18 and tied for 27th in the WNBA in blocked shots. By her third year, she played in every game and tied for second on the team in blocks with 19. Wyckoff had the third most three-pointers, 20, and was fourth on team with 33 steals. She missed all of the 2004 season due to an ACL injury, but after coming off the injured reserve she played in every game averaging 3.1 points and 2.8 rebounds in 17.5 minutes of play a game.
At Florida State, Wyckoff left her mark as one of the ACC's top players and exited FSU in its top 10 in shot-blocking (the ACC's sixth all-time), rebounds, steals, rebounds per game and scoring. She was first team All-ACC in 2001 and a two-time member of the ACC All- Defensive team.
Wyckoff was born in Lake Forest and went to high school in West Chester, Ohio. She has spent her off-seasons in Spain playing last for Mann Filter of Zaragoza.
The Chicago Sky is the 14th team in the WNBA and is led by General Manager and Head Coach Dave Cowens, a member of the NBA Hall of Fame. The season runs through Aug. 12 with 17 regular-season home games. For more information, www.chicagosky.net.
