Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL - The Chiefs were hopeful to build upon consecutive victories on Saturday night, but Beloit had other plans as they smacked 18 hits in the contest, winning by a 6-1 final.
Zane Mills, who tied a career high with seven strikeouts in his last outing, worked himself into one of the more peculiar situations of the season to kick off a ballgame. Jose Salas led off the ballgame with a base hit. Then, Nasim Nunez laid down a bunt in an effort to leg out an infield hit. As the ball eluded Peoria third baseman Osvaldo Tovalin, Mills scooped up the loose change and sprinted to third to beat Salas to the bag as the Beloit speedster tried to take an extra 90-feet on the infield hit. With one out in the inning, the Sky Carp made another out on the base paths. Victor Mesa Jr. hit a deep fly ball to left that was tracked down by Peoria's Tyler Reichenborn. Nunez, who was running on the play, did not re-touch second and was ruled out on appeal.
After escaping from the early mess, Mills settled down, dealing his way through the next four frames without allowing a run despite Beloit piling up the hits. He stranded a pair of runners in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Peoria hurler squeaked around 9 hits in his five scoreless frames.
The Sky Carp finally broke through in the sixth when Will Banfield connected on a deep drive to left that broke the scoreless tie and made it 2-0 in favor of the visitors. After picking up a couple of strikeouts, Kyler Castillo singled to set up Jose Salas with a chance and he took full advantage, lofting a wall scraper over the fence in right center as the Sky Carp lead ballooned to 4-0 and ended the evening for Mills.
Peoria attempted to chip away in the bottom of the inning, thanks to Tommy Jew's wheels. He legged out an infield hit and immediately swiped second base. A throwing error from the catcher Banfield allowed Jew to scamper over to third base with Todd Lott at the dish. Lott then promptly sent a grounder to second base that allowed Jew to come in to score and cut the deficit to 4-1. Unfortunately, it was the only run the Chiefs would score this evening.
In the eighth, two-straight singles presented Salas another opportunity to drive home a run, and he did just that, chalking up his fifth hit of the game and making it a 5-1 Beloit edge. A sac fly from Mesa Jr. increased the Sky Carp lead to 6-1. Peoria did not recover and dropped their third contest of the series.
The loss knocks the Chiefs to 33-47 overall and 5-9 in the second half. Peoria will attempt to settle for a series split tomorrow afternoon with the finale set to commence at 1:35 from Dozer Park. The expected pitching matchup features Wilfredo Pereira for the Chiefs and Jackson Rose for the Sky Carp.
