Salas, Fitterer Boost Beloit Past Peoria
July 9, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
After a two-game offensive lull, the Sky Carp lineup erupted for 18 hits and defeated Peoria 6-1 on Saturday night at Dozer Park.
Of those 18 hits, five of them came from Jose Salas, as the Marlins No. 7 prospect went a perfect 5-5 with a homer and three RBIs.
However, the game started as somewhat of a pitchers' duel. Beloit tallied at least one hit in each of the first five innings but didn't score and stranded seven runners on base.
Beloit starter Evan Fitterer didn't allow near as much damage, surrendering just four hits in the first five frames.
The Sky Carp ended the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning. After a Davis Bradshaw leadoff single, Will Banfield belted a two-run homer to left to make it 2-0.
Later in the inning, with Kyler Castillo on first, Salas launched a two-run shot to deep right center field to double the lead.
In the bottom half, the Chiefs scored an unearned run, but that's all they would get against Fitterer. The crafty righty pitched a career-high seven innings, striking out four while walking one on his way to the win.
While the Sky Carp bullpen shut things down, Beloit got two insurance runs in the top of the eighth on RBIs from Salas and Victor Mesa Jr.
The Sky Carp will have the chance to seal their sixth series victory in their last seven sets tomorrow at 1:35. Fans can tune in using the Big Radio App.
