Kernels Split Doubleheader with River Bandits
July 9, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels split their Saturday evening doubleheader with Quad Cities, taking game one 5-1 before falling 5-2 in game two. Cedar Rapids is now 48-32, 5-9 in the second half.
Game One - Kernels 5, River Bandits 1
Cedar Rapids relied on stingy pitching in game one as Sean Mooney opened things with 3.0 innings of two-hit baseball, allowing just a lone earned run while striking out three and working around three walks. Orlando Rodriguez earned his first win of the season out of the pen, firing 2.2 shutout frames while striking out three. He faced the minimum, inducing a double-play grounder after allowing his lone runner to reach on a walk.
Alerick Soularie and Yunior Severino each launched towering solo shots out to left in the first and second innings respectively, putting the Kernels in front 2-0. After the River Bandits plated a run in the third, Will Holland helped keep the basepaths clean in the fourth by making a ridiculous tumbling grab in right-center field.
The Kernels would add three more in the sixth as Seth Gray doubled in a pair and Wander Javier plated a run with an infield single. Bobby Milacki closed out the win with his first save of 2022, retiring each of the four men he faced.
Game Two - River Bandits 5, Kernels 2
Five first-inning runs on six straight one-out hits doomed the Kernels early in the nightcap. Cedar Rapids' pen dominated as Brad Hanner (2.0 IP, H, BB, 5 K), Tyler Palm (1.0 IP, H, 2 K) and Matt Mullenbach (1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 K) combined for 4.0 scoreless the rest of the way.
The Kernels plated their two runs in the third as Kyler Fedko singled home Dylan Neuse before Javier scored on an error.
The series finale is set for 2:05 p.m. CT on Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
