Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Sugar Land Skeeters found the cozy right field dimensions at Clipper Magazine Stadium very much to their liking Tuesday evening.
Playing their first road game of the season, the Skeeters cleared the right field wall four times, good for six runs en route to a 9-2 victory over the host Lancaster Barnstormers Tuesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Courtney Hawkins opened the salvo with a three-run blast off Steve Johnson (1-1) in the second inning. Rey Navarro connected twice, homering in his first two Atlantic League at bats. Albert Cordero finished the barrage with a leadoff blast in the fifth.
Kyle Kubitza tacked on an RBI single in the fourth inning, and Derek Norris contributed an RBI double to left in the eighth inning.
In addition to the four home runs, the Skeeters were able to take advantage of eight walks, four of which came home to score.
The 'Stormers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Tyler Bortnick and Joey Terdoslavich picked up walks from left-hander Ben Griset around a bloop hit to Blake Gailen. Ryan Casteel hooked a bases-loaded line drive to left field. Anthony Giansanti appeared to have trouble picking the ball out of the glare but recovered to make a diving catch, limiting the Barnstormers to one run on the sacrifice fly.
Two innings later, Giansanti snuffed out another budding rally with another diving catch against Casteel, pinning two runners on base.
Overall, the Barnstormers picked up eight hits off a quartet of Sugar Land pitchers. Terdoslavich and Trayvon Robinson picked up two apiece.
The series continues on Wednesday evening. Tommy Shirley (1-0) makes the start for Lancaster against right-hander Mitch Talbot (1-0). Fans may tune into the YouTube webcast beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Blake Gailen's on-base streak was stretched to 11 games...Robinson has reached base in all nine starts...Bortnick stole a base in the seventh inning, keeping the team's streak alive at 11 games...It was the club's 26th stolen base of the season...The four homers and eight walks were season highs allowed by the Lancaster staff...Robinson's triple in the eighth was his second of the season.
