Bees Defeat Ducks In Series Opener

(New Britain, CT) - The New Britain Bees (3-7) defeated the Long Island Ducks (5-5) 5-2 at New Britain Stadium on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game midweek series between Liberty Division rivals.
New Britain starting pitcher Kyle Simon (1-1) was victorious, allowing just one run on eight hits across six innings on the mound, walking one and striking out six. Long Island starting pitcher Andrew Barbosa registered a no-decision after retiring all four batters he faced, but had to exit the ballgame with one man down in the bottom half of the second inning due to injury. Kevin Chapman fired an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief out of the New Britain bullpen, striking out three to tally his first save of the season.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Bees went to work against losing pitcher Jake Dunning (0-1). The right-hander issued a four-pitch walk to Jonathan Galvez, and Conor Bierfeldt followed with a mammoth two-run home run over the wall in left to give the home team a 2-1 advantage. New Britain made it 4-1 in their favor in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from James Skelton that plated Ozney Guillen and a run-scoring base knock off the bat of Deibinson Romero that allowed Darren Ford to cross the plate after Ford doubled earlier in the frame, extending his hitting streak to a team-high seven consecutive games overall. The Bees added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Reid Brignac drove home Skelton with a double into the right field corner, giving the game its final score of 5-2. New Britain continues their series with the Long Island Ducks on Wednesday, May 9th. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 A.M. It will be the first School Day game of the year, presented by Whitson's Catering.
