Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters lost the series opener to the Somerset Patriots, 8-3, at Constellation Field in front of 2,477 fans on Two Steppin' Tuesday. The loss drops the Skeeters to 22-29 in the second half and 58-63 overall.
Somerset staked an early lead in the top of the second. David Vidal took Kelvin Villa's 0-1 offering the other way, hooking the right field foul pole for a solo home run to give the Patriots a 1-0 advantage.
Sugar Land wasted no time in pushing across the equalizer in the home half of the second. Delwyn Young led off the frame with a single into right before Chris Wallace picked up his Atlantic League-leading 69th-RBI of the season on a double into right-center to tie the game at one.
After Villa put up a zero in the top of the third, the Skeeters offense sparked for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning. Willy Taveras drew a walk with one out and immediately stole second to move into scoring position. Jeff Dominguez allowed Taveras to advance with a groundout to second before Travis Scott pulled a single through the right-side of the infield to give Sugar Land a 2-1 lead.
Villa settled in through the middle innings before running into trouble in the top of the sixth. Following a leadoff strikeout, Mike Wilson singled up the middle to chase the Skeeters southpaw from the game. Andrew Johnston was called on in relief and surrendered back-to-back walks to load the bases. Johnston almost escaped trouble with a ground ball to short, but a short throw to first allowed a pair of runs to score on the throwing error as the Patriots reclaimed the lead, 3-2.
The Patriots tacked on an additional two runs in the top of the seventh. Aharon Eggleston opened the inning with a single off Cory VanAllen before Thomas Neal lifted a two-run home run to the left-center alley to increase Somerset's lead to 5-2.
Somerset pushed across three runs in the top of the eighth to take a commanding lead. Andrew Carpenter allowed three runs to come home before Dan Runzler escaped further damage, down 8-2.
The Skeeters narrowed the gap in the bottom of the ninth, but the six run deficit proved too much to overcome. Renny Osuna picked up an RBI single to score Wallace in the inning, but Sugar Land fell, 8-3.
