Revs Hampered by Near Misses in Loss to Riversharks

September 1, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution dropped the opening game of their seven-game homestand 4-2 to the Camden Riversharks on Tuesday evening at Santander Stadium. The Revs will look to snap a three-game skid when they host Camden again on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.

The Sharks grabbed an early lead that they would not relinquish. Michael Rockett led off the game with a double to left, moved to second on a ground out by Eric Frain, and scored on a ground ball by Brandon Chaves for a quick 1-0 lead.

Camden played small ball to scratch across another run in the second. With two outs and no base runners, Evan Crawford kept the inning alive with a base hit on a swinging bunt, before Landis Wilson blooped a single to shallow right. With runners at the corners, Zach MacPhee, who entered the game batting .178, embarked on his big night with an RBI single through the right side of the infield to make it 2-0. MacPhee would add another RBI single on a liner to right in the fourth, giving Camden a 3-0 lead.

Sharks starter Wes Torrez did not allow a hit until Wilson Valdez reached on an infield single to lead off the home fourth. Brandon Boggs later cranked a two-run homer to right, his 10th of the year, slashing the deficit to 3-2.

Camden tacked on an unearned run for insurance in the seventh, as Valdez' relay to first on an attempted inning-ending double play sailed high, allowing MacPhee (leadoff walk) to cross the plate on the error.

Lewis (9-10) was solid in his second-longest outing of the year, giving up just three earned runs in eight innings of work despite suffering the loss.

The Revs could not break through the rest of the night, and were hampered by a pair of near misses in the late innings. Yeicok Calderon came up just short of a potential game-tying two-run homer in the seventh as his deep drive was caught by MacPhee with his back against the right field fence, while Eric Patterson's bid at a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth did not seem to carry either and was caught along the track in deep right-center.

Torrez (6-7) allowed just three hits and two runs in seven innings for the win, while Dan Blewett and Matt Gorgen each worked a scoreless inning with Gorgen picking up his 29th save, one off the league lead.

The Revs were held to just four hits, their lowest total since being limited to three hits on August 11 vs. Lancaster.

MacPhee led the Riversharks going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI singles, a walk, and a run scored. MacPhee's third hit came on a leadoff triple in the ninth but reliever Tony Pena came back with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to strand him.

Notes: Pounds drew a pair of walks, taking over the league lead with 58 on the season. Tuesday's game began a stretch of 20 consecutive game days to close the regular season, with 14 of those at home. Tuesday marked the second consecutive game in which York fell behind first; the Revs had previously scored first in 12 consecutive games. The Revs have lost three straight for the first time since August 1-3. York had won each of its previous four games. Lewis allowed three or fewer for the eighth time in his last 10 starts. Pena logged a scoreless outing for the 19th time in his last 20 appearances. The Revs fall to four games back in the Freedom Division's second half race behind Lancaster who was idle on Tuesday night. York lefty Frank Gailey (3-3, 2.46) will face Camden southpaw Jeff Singer (1-0, 4.50) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. It is United Way Campaign Kick-Off Celebration Night featuring a Rally Towel Giveaway to the first 3,000 fans presented by United Way of York County. The night features a Custom United Way Jersey Auction. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
