SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters evened the series with the Bridgeport Bluefish after pounding out seven runs in a 7-2 rout. The win bolsters the Skeeters' record to 15-23 in the second half and 51-57 overall.
Starting pitcher Josh Geer snapped a three-game losing streak with 6.1 strong innings on the rubber. The former member of the San Diego Padres allowed two runs on eight hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. The right-hander evened his season record to 5-5 following the victory.
Bridgeport jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. Bryan Sabatella legged out a double on a shot to shortstop that Amadeo Zazueta was unable to see in the sun. A sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly from Josh Prince and Welington Dotel allowed the Bluefish to splash out to a quick 1-0 advantage.
After being held in check for the first three innings, the Skeeters offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth. Jeff Dominguez roped a single into center to open the inning and stole second to move into scoring position. Delwyn Young lifted a single just out of reach of a leaping Prince at second, bringing home Dominguez and tying the game at one. With the outfield playing him to pull, Chris Wallace sprayed a double down the right field line, scoring Young from first and giving Sugar Land its first lead of the series, 2-1.
Sugar Land took advantage of a plethora of Bluefish miscues in the bottom of the fifth to add an additional run. Kevin Russo legged out a slow-roller in front of the plate and a wide throw to first from the catcher allowed Russo to advance to second. Following a wild pitch, Amadeo Zazueta slapped a grounder deep in the hole to second that rolled under Prince's glove, allowing Russo to score and inflate the lead to 3-1.
The Skeeters continued to push across runs in the bottom of the sixth. Renny Osuna singled up the middle to open the frame before Travis Scott pulled a double into the right field corner to score Osuna easily from first to move the score to 4-1.
Bridgeport would close the gap in the top of the seventh, chasing Geer from the game. Ethan Chapman drew a walk to start the inning and a one-out single from Prince would knock Geer out of the game. Dan Runzler surrendered a single through the right-side of the infield to score a run, but the former member of the San Francisco Giants induced a strikeout and groundout to end the rally.
After a perfect top of the eighth from Andrew Johnston, the Skeeters put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Dominguez reached on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third. Osuna singled into right to score the Sugar Land center fielder. A walk to Young and a fielder's choice from Scott put two runners on with two outs. Wallace banged a two-run double off the wall in left for his second and third RBI of the night, pushing the score to 7-2.
Derrick Loop recorded his 20th-straight scoreless outing, inducing a 6-4-3 game-ending double play to clinch the 7-2 victory over the Bluefish.
