August 18, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
James Simmons drove in four runs, leading a comeback effort but the York Revolution ultimately fell in 12 innings, 6-5 at Southern Maryland in their series opener on Monday night. York slips to 20-17 in the second half, four games back of Lancaster for first place, while Southern Maryland snaps a five-game skid, improving to 14-23. York will look to even the series on Tuesday evening.
The Blue Crabs built a 4-0 lead through the first three innings against Revs starter Hunter Adkins who was making his debut, having joined the team earlier in the day. Jovan Rosa lined an RBI single to right to open the scoring in the bottom of the first, while the Blue Crabs loaded the bases with no outs in the third, cashing in for three more. Rosa and Craig Maddox provided RBI singles, while Casey Frawley added a sacrifice fly before Adkins escaped further damage by leaving the bases loaded.
The Revs went right to work on their comeback attempt, answering with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth. Telvin Nash roped a two-out RBI double to left-center to get the Revs on the board, while Luis De La Cruz battled his way on base with a walk to cap an 11-pitch plate appearance. After also battling with two strikes, Simmons hooked a line drive two-run single to left, bringing the Revs within 4-3.
Adkins responded with a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth, but was greeted by Rosa who led off with a double that carried over right fielder Yeicok Calderon's head to begin the fifth. Adkins retired Gustavo Molina for the third time on the night with a ground out before being lifted, but was charged with the run when Rosa scored on a two-out single to center by Frawley, increasing the Crabs' lead to 5-3.
York again answered right away. Calderon led off the sixth with a ground rule double to deep right, while Nash walked with one out to put two runners aboard. York was in danger of wasting the leadoff double, but with two outs, Simmons drilled a shot to the right-center gap for a two-run triple, tying the score at 5-5. Simmons went 2-for-5 with four RBI on the night in his first start in two weeks.
Blue Crabs starter Daryl Thompson took a no-decision, allowing five runs over six innings. He allowed just five hits but walked five batters.
Southern Maryland's bullpen was nearly flawless, however, allowing just two hits over six scoreless innings. York's only runner in scoring position came on a two-out double to right-center by Nick Ferdinand in the 11th.
The Revs tied a team record for the third time and second time this season by using eight relievers. After Beau Vaughan recorded the final two outs of the fifth, Luis Perdomo, Mike DeMark, Edward Paredes, Ron Schreurs, Tony Pena, and Josh Judy all tossed scoreless innings. Southern Maryland did not place a runner in scoring position from the sixth until a two-out single by Antone DeJesus and walk to Casey Stevenson in the 11th, but Judy struck out Zach Wilson looking to keep the game tied.
Rosa (4-for-6) greeted Stephen Penney (3-4) with a swinging bunt hit to begin the bottom of the 12th and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Keith Castillo. Following an intentional walk to Craig Maddox, Penney initially jumped ahead of Frawley 0-2, but after the count drew even, Frawley connected on a game-winning double to deep left-center, plating Rosa with the winning run.
Former Revs lefty Wade Korpi (4-3) picked up the win as the fifth reliever out of Southern Maryland's bullpen, working a scoreless 12th.
Notes: Simmons cranked a two-run game-tying homer in the ninth inning of the Revs' most recent contest at Regency Furniture Stadium, and had six RBI in his last four at-bats at Regency Furniture Stadium through his sixth inning triple. The extra-inning game is the club record-tying 11th of the season for the Revs, matching their total from 2009 and 2013. York falls to 5-6 in extra-inning games, 4-4 on the road. Southern Maryland improves to 6-5 in extra-inning contests, 5-4 at home. The Revs slip to 8-10 vs. Southern Maryland for the season, 6-2 in the second half. York is now 3-2 on its current 8-game road trip. With a scoreless 10th inning, Pena extends his scoreless streak to 13 consecutive outings, a Revs season-best. The game-winning run was only the fourth earned run allowed in 31.1 innings by the bullpen over the last seven games. York falls to 15-11 in games decided in the final at-bat. Revs lefty Frank Gailey (3-3, 2.23) will start on Tuesday, facing Crabs right-hander Brian Baker (5-9, 5.12). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., while Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
