CAMDEN, New Jersey - Sugar Land scored 12 runs in the final four innings to comeback and beat the Camden Riversharks in a convincing win Saturday night at Campbell's Field.
Bobby Livingston (5-2) took the mound for the tenth time this season in a Skeeters (20-28) uniform, and came out on top with the win for the fourth time in his last five outings. He now has three wins in a row.
The game started off a bit shaky for the Skeeters ace in the bottom of the first. Livingston threw wild and hit Brian Burgamy and then gave up three singles in a row letting Camden (24-25) take the lead, 2-0. Eduardo Perez and Raul Padron each tagged Livingston for RBI-singles.
The Skeeters responded in the top of the second, though. Miguel Negron walked to start the inning, and Jason Lane followed with an RBI-double deep to left to half the lead, 2-1. Riversharks starter Sean Jarrett worked five and two thirds innings allowing four earned runs off six hits in the no-decision.
Before Livingston found his groove, Camden scored three more in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded through the first three batters of the inning, Lloyd Turner knocked a sacrifice-fly into center bringing the runner from third home to double the lead, 3-1. After another walk to load the bases for the second time, the Riversharks used an RBI-single from catcher Alvin Colina to take a 4-1 lead and another sacrifice-fly from Perez to cap the scoring at 5-1.
Through the middle three innings, Riversharks starter Jarrett retired 13 batters in a row from the second to the sixth before the Skeeters found some daylight offensively. In the sixth, Sugar Land bounced back with a two-out rally to inch closer with three runs. Ofilio Castro smacked a single up the middle and Manny Mejia followed suit with another into left to put two on for Negron. With Jarrett still pitching, Negron blasted a ball off the starter into left bringing Castro around to make the score 5-2. Mejia wound up at third but didn't stay for long when Lane hit his second double of the game scoring both runners cutting the deficit down to one, 5-4.
Camden made their first pitching change in the sixth inning bringing on Mariano Gomez (1-1) who ended up with the loss after giving up three more runs in the seventh. The sun was setting behind third base shooting right into the first baseman's eyes, and it proved consequential for the Riversharks. Octavio Martinez grounded to third, and with plenty of time to make an accurate throw, Camden's third baseman Eduardo Perez fired to first. However, first baseman Raul Padron had to contend with the sun and could not find the ball as it sailed past him and into the stands for a ground-rule double. In the very next at-bat, Iggy Suarez bunted to third forcing another throw from Perez to first. This time around, second baseman Turner had trouble tracking the ball and again it ended up in the seats giving Martinez the opportunity to come home to tie the game, 5-5.
Dominic Ramos came up to bat in at the top of the order, and with one on and still none out, Ramos launched a fastball down the line into left for his fifth home run of the season. The two-run blast put the Skeeters ahead, 7-5.
The most important part of the game came in the bottom of the seventh when reliever Eric Krebs came into the game to substitute Livingston inheriting two runners with no outs in the inning. Krebs retired all three outs facing just three batters to keep the Riversharks from scoring.
Sugar Land scored two more in the eighth and four more in the ninth to cement the 13-5 win.
Skeeters Bites: Dominic Ramos hit his fifth home run of the season...Jason Lane went 3-4 with three doubles and three RBI...Bobby Livingston picked up his fifth win of the season...This is the third most runs scored by Sugar Land in a game this season...These are the first back-to-back wins for the Skeeters in 16 games.
The Skeeters have the chance to win the series in game four tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. CDT at Campbell's Field.
