Skagerlind Selected as Mainers Fan Vote Nominee
July 17, 2023 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, Maine - With two Sanford Mainers already headed to Lynn, Mass. on Sunday, July 23 for the 2023 NECBL All-Star Game, Presented by Metro Credit Union, one more has the chance to go, but he needs the fans' help.
Second-year Mainer Kevin Skagerlind (UMass Amherst) has been nominated to represent the green and yellow in this year's NECBL All-Star Game Fan Vote.
Skagerlind is enjoying one of the biggest turnarounds in the league this season. The Holden, Mass. native is batting .275, which ranks him within the top-25 of all qualified hitters, with 18 runs scored, one home run and 10 RBIs.
"Captain Skags" has found his way on-base in each of his last six games in a stretch that sees him hitting .400 (8-20), with 10 runs scored, one home run, two RBIs and five walks. That stretch has helped him boost his on-base percentage to .414, which ranks him third on the Mainers, all while keeping his season strikeout number to 11, which is outweighed by his 11 walks and six hit-by-pitches.
"From a manager's perspective Kevin Skagerlind is everything you'd want out of a player," manager Nic Lops, who is coaching Skagerlind for the second straight summer, said. "Aside from his consistent play both at bat and in the field this summer, Kevin has been a tremendous leader for our ball club; a guy all the other players look up to."
The Minuteman's attitude, which is contagious around the team, is one that he carried last year as well even when things were not going his way. Skagerlind hit just .125 (9-72) while scoring 15 runs and driving in four for the Mainers in 2022, but he did not let those results get the best of him but instead used them to better himself.
"He's put in the work to improve his craft, been a clutch performer for us, and made everyone around him better," Lops said.
That work that Skagerlind put in has him looking to join fellow Mainers Logan Poteet (Vanderbilt) and Devan Bade (Binghamton) on the East Division roster at Fraser Field in just under a week.
