
Six-Run Third Crushes Birds

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (26-17) dropped the first game of their series against the Lincoln Saltdogs (30-11) with a 9-4 loss in front of 4,009 fans at the Birdcage on Tuesday night.
The Birds made their first mark on the scoreboard in the second inning. Wil Quintana led off with a walk. Abner Arroyo followed with a single, advancing Quintana to third base. Quintana crossed home plate when Ben Van Iderstine bounced into a double play. After two innings, the Canaries led 1-0.
The lead didn't last long. The first batter of the third inning, Corey Harrington, led off with his third home run of the year, tying the game 1-1. The Saltdogs then unleashed their bats and had six consecutive hits. Bryan Warner and Brett Cooley singled putting runners on the corners. Josh Patton doubled, scoring Warner, 2-1. Seth Pietsch hit a single that allowed Cooley and Patton to come around giving the Saltdogs a 4-1 lead. Jay Yaconetti and Tony Garcia followed with a pair of singles. Garcia's single allowed Pietsch to score. With two outs, Corey Harrington earned his second hit of the inning, driving in Yaconetti. At the end of the third inning, the Saltdogs led 6-1.
Lincoln put two more runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Bryan Warner singled and Brett Cooley hit his first home run of the night to put Lincoln up seven, 8-1.
The Canaries took one back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Van Iderstine led off with a single up the middle advancing to third on singles by Matt Imwalle and Tim Marks. Lessler reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Van Iderstine and making it 8-2 Saltdogs.
The Saltdogs took the run back in the top of the sixth. Cooley hit his sixth homer of the year to spread the lead back to seven, 9-2.
The Canaries rallied in the ninth inning. Abner Arroyo singled and Van Iderstine doubled. Imwalle drove in Arroyo and Marks drove in Van Iderstine, getting the Birds within five runs. However, the deficit was too much for the Birds to overcome, with the Saltdogs winning, 9-4.
The Canaries and Saltdogs face off in the middle game of the series on Wednesday night. Wednesday is "Negro League Night" presented by Holiday Inn City Centre where the Canaries will pay tribute to the contributions and strides made by the Negro League.
