Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - Alberto Concepcion belted a three-run homerun, part of a six-run seventh inning, leading the Jacksonville Suns (68-42, 27-13) to an 11-8 win over the Carolina Mudcats (47-63, 19-21) in front of 2,422 Wednesday night at Five County Stadium.
The Suns remain in control of first place in the Southern League South Division, entering Wednesday three games ahead of the second place Montgomery Biscuits.
Jacksonville opened the scoring in the first inning against Carolina starter Jesus Silva when Kevin Howard tripled home Juan Gonzalez for a 1-0 lead. Carolina tied the game off of Suns starter Zach Hammes in the second inning when Grant Psomas smashed his 15th homerun of the season to make it 1-1.
The Suns took advantage of a two-out error by Silva during the third inning by scoring three runs after the error. Kevin Howard scored on the actual error when Silva was unable to handle a throw to first base as he covered from the mound. James Tomlin later singled home Alberto Concepcion and Blake DeWitt for a 4-1 Jacksonville lead. The Suns added another run in the fourth starting with David Nicholson's leadoff triple that later scored on a Thomas Giles sacrifice fly for a 5-1 lead.
A Grant Psomas sacrifice fly in the fourth against Hammes scored Lee Mitchell after his leadoff triple to cut the Suns lead to 5-2. Chase Lambin ran Hammes from the game in the fifth inning when he doubled home Dante Brinkley and Eric Riggs, who had recorded back-to-back hits to begin the inning, making it 5-4 Suns.
Jacksonville then belted reliever Scott Nestor in the seventh inning with six runs on five hits. Alberto Concepcion's homerun, his 10th of the season, followed back-to-back one-out walks to open an 8-4 lead. David Nicholson later doubled home two more runs while Cory Dunlap added an RBI single for an 11-4 lead.
Carolina made it interesting in the eighth inning as former Dodgers farmhand Eric Riggs hit a two-out grandslam homerun off of Suns reliever Ramon Troncoso to cut the lead to 11-8. The Mudcats got the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but could not score.
Mark Alexander (4-0) picked up the relief win for Jacksonville while Jesus Silva (0-4) got the loss for Carolina. Suns reliever Luis Gonzalez left the game after three pitches with an injury after landing awkwardly on his right leg.
The Suns travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee Thursday to open a five-game series against the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds) at 7:15 p.m. Fans can follow the action in Jacksonville on AM 930 The Fox or online at jaxsuns.com.
