Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports fell behind 3-0 quickly on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. The tides turned quickly in the bottom of the second. Stockton scored six runs on six hits on its way to a 10-5 win over the High Desert Mavericks to pull even in their series at a game apiece.

High Desert opened the scoring in the second on a two-out, two-run single by Jose Trevino. The Mavericks added to their lead in the second as Josh Morgan led off with a single and scored later in the inning on a sac-fly by Scott Heineman to make it a 3-0 advantage.

The Ports got to Mavericks starter Adam Quintana (3-4) in the second. Sandber Pimentel led off with a double and, two batters later, Seth Brown singled to put two aboard. Mikey White then delivered an RBI single that cut the Ports deficit to 3-1. Argenis Raga then singled to load the bases. After a wild pitch allowed a second run to come in, Melvin Mercedes walked and Richie Martin delivered a two-run double down the left field line that vaulted the Ports in front 4-3. James Harris followed with a two-run double to center that made it a 6-3 Ports lead.

Quintana started the second inning by walking John Nogowski and then giving up a double to Brown, at which point he was lifted for Austin Pettibone, who gave up a two-run single to White that stretched the Stockton lead to 8-3.

Quintana suffered the loss, going two-plus innings and allowing eight runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out two. Pettibone would pitch three scoreless innings in relief for High Desert.

The Mavericks shaved two runs of their deficit in the fourth. With one on and one out, Morgan hit a two-run homer to left to make it an 8-5 ballgame. Ports starter Matt Stalcup (3-0) would go on to retire the next five batters he faced to finish his outing and Ports pitching retired 12 of the next 13 batters following the homer.

Stalcup picked up the win, going five innings and allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out four.

Casey Meisner (SV, 1) took over in the sixth in long relief and was solid down the stretch. Meisner would toss four scoreless innings and go on to pick up his first career save, allowing two hits while walking one and striking out two.

The Ports added two late runs in the eighth. With one on and two out, Harris delivered his second home run in as many nights, a two-run shot to right field to make it a 10-5 Stockton advantage. The runs were the only runs allowed by Mavericks reliever Kelvin Vasquez, who pitched the final three innings for High Desert.

The Ports and Mavericks play the rubber match of their three-game series on Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Heath Fillmyer (5-6, 3.60 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by High Desert right-hander David Ledbetter (3-7, 5.36 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
