Jackson Offs Nuts with Slam, 11-7
July 15, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
In a wild back-and-forth ballgame, each team erased a deficit, and the Bakersfield Blaze rode a booming walkoff grand slam to an 11-7 win over the Modesto Nuts on Throwback Thursday at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
The first half of the game was a bit sloppy. After Anthony Misiewicz worked a quick 1st, the Blaze plated a pair in the home half off Ryan Castellani for a 2-0 lead.
Art Warren came on for the long work and after an easy 2nd, the 3rd got a bit strange. Two infield hits and a hit-by-pitch began the frame, and a walk forced in a run. A fielders' choice scored another, and an error plated a third. A walk, a double play grounder, and the first hit out of the infled pushed across another three, and the Blaze found themselves behind 6-2.
A quick strike brought the Blaze back to within a run. Joe DeCarlo came up with his second extra-base hit of the night and drove in his third run, and Jordan Cowan and Aaron Barbosa collected infield hits to make it a 6-5 hole.
The Nuts got one back in the 5th before the game finally settled in a bit, with the score remaining 7-5 into the 8th.
The Blaze came alive late. With Logan Cozart on the mound, a Braden Bishop RBI single and a Jay Baum sacrifice fly tied the game at seven. And in the 9th, Bakersfield went big.
Tyler Matzek (L, 0-3) ran into control issues, walking two batters and hitting another, bringing up Drew Jackson. And in an 0-2 count, with the Blaze just needing a flyball, Jackson smashed a grand slam homer, walking off with four runs and the 11-7 win.
The Blaze bullpen was solid once again with Kody Kerski going 2.0 scoreless innings, and Ramon Morla (W, 1-2) pitched the 9th for the win.
The victory moves the Blaze to 16-5 in the second half, and into a tie with the Rawhide for the best record in the league, overall.
