San Jose Giants News Release

LANCASTER, CA - The San Jose Giants lost both games of Thursday's doubleheader to the Lancaster JetHawks, 3-0 and 9-4, at The Hangar. JetHawks starting pitcher Trent Thornton threw a seven-inning shutout in the opener before Lancaster erupted for nine runs over the first four innings in the nightcap en route to completing the doubleheader sweep. San Jose (48-43) has now lost a season-high tying four consecutive games overall.

Dylan Davis (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) smacked a two-run home run while Jonah Arenado (2-for-3, 2 RBI) singled twice and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Giants offensively in the second game of the twinbill. Daniel Carbonell (2-for-2) had two of San Jose's four hits in the first game. San Francisco Giants infielder Ehire Adrianza went a combined 2-for-5 with a double in the two games as he continued his rehabilitation assignment.

Game 1 was a pitchers' duel between Thornton and San Jose starter Phil Bickford as the contest was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. The Giants threatened in the top of the first against Thornton as Adrianza smashed a one-out double off the right field fence, but was stranded in scoring position when Davis grounded out and Arenado popped out to end the inning. San Jose's only two baserunners over the next four innings against Thornton were one-out singles from Carbonell in the second and fifth, but T.J. Bennett followed in both frames by hitting into a double play.

Meanwhile, Bickford pitched around back-to-back out singles in the bottom of the first inducing a double play from Lancaster clean-up hitter Bryan Muniz to work out of trouble. Bickford then tossed three straight 1-2-3 innings to keep the game scoreless. The right-hander threw a total of just 38 pitches over the first four innings.

Bickford had retired 10 straight JetHawks batters until Jason Martin led off the bottom of the fifth with a double down the right field line. Trent Woodward then dropped down a sacrifice bunt advancing Martin to third. Keach Ballard was up next and he hit grounder back to the mound. Martin attempted to score on the play, but was easily thrown out by Bickford at the plate for the second out of the inning. Brooks Marlow though followed with a double into the right field corner to score Ballard with the first run of the night.

Trailing 1-0, the Giants had an opportunity to tie the game in the top of the sixth as Ronnie Jebavy doubled with two outs, but pinch-hitter Cristian Paulino popped out to second to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Johnny Seward doubled with one out before Ramon Laureano crushed a two-run home run to left center. The homer, Laureano's seventh of the season, extended the JetHawks lead to 3-0.

Thornton completed the shutout with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh.

Thornton (6-4) surrendered just four hits during his seven-inning masterpiece. The right-hander struck out four, walked none and threw only 76 pitches.

Bickford (2-1) was saddled with his first California League loss despite also throwing a shortened complete game. Bickford yielded three runs (all earned) on six hits over six innings. He walked none, struck out three and threw just 66 pitches.

San Jose was the home team in Game 2, but saw Lancaster score three times in the top of the first against Jordan Johnson to take the early lead. With one out, Antonio Nunez doubled before scoring on Muniz's two-out single into left. Following a walk to Marlow, Drew Ferguson delivered an RBI single. A wild pitch then plated Marlow to make the score 3-0.

Back-to-back home runs for the JetHawks in the top of the second then pushed the margin to 6-0. With two outs, Nunez walked before Laureano belted a two-run homer to straightaway center. Muniz followed on the next pitch with a towering solo home run to left for a 6-0 Lancaster advantage.

The JetHawks kept the pressure on with two more runs against Johnson in the top of the third. A pair of singles put runners on first and second with one out before Marc Wik smacked a two-RBI triple to right to make it 8-0.

Johnson (6-7) took the loss after surrendering a career-high eight runs (all earned) on eight hits over three innings. The right-hander walked a season-high four batters and struck out two.

Lancaster scored their final run of the night in the top of the fourth with D.J. Snelten (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) on the mound as Laureano led off with a triple to deep right center and immediately came home when next batter, Muniz, singled.

JetHawks starter Rogelio Armenteros began his outing with three scoreless innings. Armenteros allowed just one hit over the opening three frames before the Giants rallied in the bottom of the fourth. Adrianza led off the fourth with a single before taking second on a wild pitch. Davis then launched an opposite-field two-run homer to right center trimming the Lancaster lead to 9-2. The home run was Davis's fourth of the season with San Jose.

The Giants then scored two more runs off of Armenteros in the bottom of the fifth. A one-out double from Robbie Garvey was followed by a walk to Adrianza. After a two-out wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, Arenado grounded a two-RBI single into right bringing San Jose to within 9-4. The Giants though would get no closer in the contest as Armenteros and reliever Kevin McCanna combined to retire the next seven San Jose hitters to end the game.

Armenteros (6-2) picked-up the win after pitching the first five innings with four runs (all earned) and seven hits allowed. He walked one and struck out seven.

Laureano was a combined 4-for-7 with a triple, two home runs and four RBI's in the two games of the doubleheader to lead the JetHawks offensively.

Notes: * San Jose has allowed a total of 31 runs during their current four-game losing streak (8.10 ERA). * Thursday's second game was a make-up of the April 10 rainout at Municipal Stadium and counted towards the first half standings. The Giants officially finish the first half with a 39-31 record and in second place in the North Division (seven games behind division champion Visalia). * Davis has four home runs and 12 RBI's in 15 games with San Jose this season (.279 AVG). * The first game of the doubleheader was played in just one hour and 24 minutes. * Pitcher Austin Fleet was added to the Giants roster from Sacramento (AAA) before the games on Thursday.

On Deck: The Giants and JetHawks conclude their four-game series on Friday evening with first pitch at The Hangar scheduled for 6:35 PM. San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain is slated to make the start on the mound for San Jose as part of a rehabilitation assignment. Lancaster is expected to counter with Dean Deetz (4-5, 4.02 ERA). The game can be heard live on sjgiants.com with coverage beginning at 6:05 PM.
