Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers scored six time in the bottom of the second inning to defeat the Victoria Seals 7-5 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers went up 7-0 in the game and the Seals battled back to make a game of it but Mac Suzuki (1) closed the door late in the game. With the victory the Snakes win the series with Victoria and improve to 17-10, increasing their Golden Baseball League North Division lead to a game and a half over Chico.

Suzuki was terrific in recording his first save of the season as he went the final inning and two thirds giving up only one hit while striking out three and not walking a batter. In the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and one out, Suzuki came into the game to record the final two outs of the inning and keep his team in the lead. Erik Dessau (3-0) provided a great start for the Vipers as he threw seven innings and gave up three runs while striking out five. Travis Wade (1-5) took the loss in giving up seven runs in three and a third innings.

Defensively Nelson Castro was spectacular making two great diving plays with one to his forehand and one to his backhand late in the game.

At the plate Jorge Mejia stayed red-hot going two-for-three with a three run homer.

Calgary opened the scoring in a big way in the second inning as Colin Moro hit his third home run of the year to start the big frame. Drew Miller followed with a base hit, Mark Okano doubled, Rick Guarno plated a run with a groundout, and Okano scored on a passed ball. Three more runs scored with two outs as Fehlandt Lentini and Castro singled and Mejia smacked his second big fly of the season for a 6-0 lead.

A run was added in the fourth by the Vipers for a 7-0 advantage as Lentini walked and scored on a Castro run batted in double.

Victoria scored their first runs in the fifth inning as Brian Rios and Brett Flowers singled, Matt Kavanaugh drove in a run with a base hit, and Flowers scored on a double-play hit by Carlos Duncan for the 7-2 score.

In the sixth inning the Seals added another run as Sergio Pedroza and Jamar Hill walked and Rios singled in one with a base hit for a 7-3 game. With runners at the corners Castro started an inning-ending double-play with a diving stop to his left and Mejia turned the twin-killing at second with a barehanded relay for the defensive play of the game.

Two more runs were added in the eighth frame to bring the Seals within two at 7-5 as Hill walked, Rios doubled him home, Flowers singled, and Duncan plated a run with a groundout.

The Snakes now welcome the Tucson Toros starting Friday June 26th at 7:05 PM MDT for the first meeting ever between the two franchises.
