Victoria Seals News Release

Calgary, AB - Looking to take another series win out of Foothills Stadium, the Victoria Seals took to the field for a game three rubber match against the Calgary Vipers on Thursday night. The Vipers turned to Erik Dessau (2-0) on the mound, while the Seals went with Travis Wade (1-4) hoping to take the series.

Following a scoreless first frame, the Vipers would blow the game open in the bottom of the second. A lead-off home run from Colin Moro, followed up by a single from Drew Miller, a Mark Okano double, an RBI groundout from Rick Guarno and a pass ball gave Calgary a 3-0 advantage. Still in the second, back-to-back two out singles from Fehlandt Lentini and Nelson Castro were cashed on a three-run home run from Jorge Mejia for a commanding 6-0 lead.

After an argument between home plate umpire Jake Gibbon and Seals' field manager Darrell Evans to start the fourth inning sent both Dan DiPace and Evans to the clubhouse, Calgary would stretch their advantage to 7-0. An RBI double from Castro scored Lentini to give the home side a comfortable lead through four innings in Calgary.

The Seals finally got to Dessau in the fifth frame, when Brian Rios and Brett Flowers singled, and Matt Kavanaugh drove in a run with a base hit. Flowers then scored on a double-play ball from Carlos Duncan to bring the score to 7-2.

Victoria added another run in the sixth as Sergio Pedroza and Jamar Hill drew walks, and Rios picked up his second hit of the game along with an RBI to bring the Seals within four. The defensive highlight of the contest came in the same frame, when an inning-ending double play started by a diving stab from Castro killed the threat for the Seals.

The visitors would narrow the lead again in the eighth inning, though, when Hill walked, and a double from Rios scored one. Then Flowers singled, and Duncan knocked in another run with a groundout to bring the Seals within two runs, at 7-5.

With Mac Suzuki returning to the mound in the ninth inning, Victoria got a lead-off hit from Chris Van Rossum, but failed to convert to tie the game against the ex-major leaguer, as the Vipers hold on for a 7-5 victory.

Eric Dessau improves to a perfect 3-0 on the season with the victory, while Travis Wade falls to 1-5 for the Seals with the loss. Jorge Mejia led the way offensively for the Vipers, finishing at 2-for-3 with 3 RBI's while Brian Rios notched 3 hits in a losing effort for Victoria.
