Orange County Flyers News Release

FULLERTON, Calif. (6/25/2009) - After losing two of three in Chico Monday through Wednesday, the Orange County Flyers return home this weekend to Southern California, but not to the friendly confines of Cal State Fullerton's Goodwin Field.

Instead, the Flyers travel a few miles west to Blair Field in Long Beach for a three-game set against the rival Armada Friday through Sunday.

The Flyers still find themselves in second place in the Golden Baseball League Southern Division, just 4 ½ games behind the division-leading St. George Road Runners, who are 20-11. Keep in mind, the Flyers began the season with an eight-game losing streak. With hard play and determination, they have climbed out of the cellar, passing Yuma, Tucson and Long Beach and are squarely focused on moving into first place.

Former Major Leaguers Damien Jackson and Robert Fick continue to lead the Flyers offensively along with infielder Nick Guerra. Jackson is batting a team-high .333 with 29 hits, while Fick is hitting .323 with three homers, tying him for the team lead with Guerra, who is batting a team-best .378.

Also doing well with the bat is infielder Julian Benavidez, who is hitting .313 with three home runs and 16 RBIs - the same as Fick. Benavidez is also leading the team with 31 hits.

On the mound for the Flyers, reliever Bryan Harris has been getting done as the closer. He now has seven saves and a 1.69 ERA while opponents are batting just .171 against him. He was also the GBL's co-Player of the Week a week ago.

Helping Harris out in the starting role has been Andre Simpson. Simpson is 2-0 with an ERA of 4.02 with 24 strikeouts in just 15.2 innings pitched.
