Niles, OH - Trailing 7-3 heading into the ninth inning, the Aberdeen IronBirds scored five runs on three hits to take the lead and beat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Sunday evening 8-7.
The Scrappers took a six-run lead in the second inning. Chase Burnette started off the inning with a double. IronBirds starting pitcher Tim Adleman then walked Jesus Aguilar. Diego Seastrunk (3) blasted a three-run homer to right field to give Mahoning Valley a 3-0 lead.
The Scrappers weren't done. With the bases empty and one out, Dan DeGeorge reached on a throwing error by Aberdeen shortstop Michael Rooney. Adleman then walked Aaron Fields and surrendered a single to Carlos Moncrief. With the bases loaded, Nick Bartolone hit a two-run single. Giovanny Urshela, the ninth Scrapper to come to the plate, then lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Moncrief, and making it 6-0.
Adleman left the game after the third. He allowed six runs, only four earned, on six hits. He walked three and struck out two. It was his shortest outing of the season.
Mahoning Valley starting pitcher Owen Dew surrendered just two hits in the first three innings. The IronBirds finally got to him in the fourth. With one on and one out, David Anderson (9) blasted a two-run homer to dead center field, making it 6-2. Anderson has now homered in three straight games.
The Scrappers tacked on a seventh run in the seventh off of reliever Jose Barajas. The right-hander surrendered a leadoff bloop double to Urshela. Aguilar knocked him in with a double, making it 7-2.
Aberdeen tacked on a run in the eighth. Kipp Schutz led off the inning with a double to right-center field. Adam Gaylord knocked him in with an RBI-single.
In the ninth inning, the IronBirds rallied. Trent Mummey and Sammie Starr worked back-to-back walks to start off the frame. After Schutz struck out swinging, Gaylord and Anderson hit back-to-back RBI singles to pull Aberdeen to within two. Austin Rauch walked, loading the bases for Austin Knight. He delivered a base-clearing double to give Aberdeen its first lead of the ball game.
T.R. Keating (3-3) got the win after pitching two perfect innings. J.D. Goryl (1-3) surrendered three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning on the way to his third loss of the season.
