STATE COLLEGE -- Gift Ngoepe doubled as part of a two-hit night, and Adalberto Santos reached base three times, but the State College Spikes could not quite muster enough offense to get past the Tri-City ValleyCats on Sunday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in a 4-1 defeat.

Santos and Ngoepe led a late State College (25-25) charge, as the Spikes collected four hits and three walks in the sixth and seventh innings. The best State College opportunity came in the seventh, when Kelson Brown led off with a double and scored on a single by Mel Rojas, Jr. The Spikes then loaded the bases with two outs, but were stopped without scoring another run.

Tri-City (22-27) took the early lead with two runs in the first off of Spikes starter Zac Fuesser (0-2) and one in the second. The ValleyCats scored again in the sixth to extend their lead to 4-0 before the Spikes got back in the game.

Rojas went 2-for-4 in the game to join Ngoepe with multi-hit performances. The loss was the first in a Sunday home game for State College this year.

Fuesser took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over 3 2/3 innings. Mitch Fienemann finished the game for State College and tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

ValleyCats starter David Martinez (4-2) earned the win after five-plus scoreless innings in which he allowed four hits and two walks. Martinez also retired ten batters in a row at one point and racked up seven strikeouts. Michael Ness (6) stayed perfect in converting save opportunities this season with a scoreless ninth inning.

Monday, the Spikes and ValleyCats meet to finish their three-game set with a 7:05 p.m. rubber match at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will start right-hander Tyler Waldron (2-4), while Tri-City sends right-hander Andrew Robinson (0-1) to the hill.

The game will also finish off a six-game homestand for the Spikes, with a nine-day layoff before fans can catch the Spikes again in Happy Valley. The slate of promotions includes Dollar Dog Monday, presented by the flagship radio home of the Spikes, 95.3 FM 3WZ. Fans can enjoy $1 hot dogs all game long. Plus, members of the Spikes Kids Club will take over the park and fill a variety of roles when Kids Run the Show, and the Spikes Student All-Stars will be recognized.
