Six Run Ninth Inning Leads to Victory

The Calgary Vipers mounted a miracle comeback in defeating the Yuma Scorpions 14-13 in 11 innings at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Down six runs headed into the bottom of the ninth inning the Vipers loaded the bases and scored three times before Drew Miller tied the game with his second three run homerun of the night. Miller finished the game by scoring the tying and winning run and going three-for-five with six runs batted in and three runs scored. The Snakes have now won five straight games and improve their second half record to 6-2.

Yuma grabbed the early lead in the top of the third inning with a solo homerun by Darrick Hale. Rich Janeway followed by reaching on an two base error by first baseman Carlos Duncan and after a ground ball moved him to third base, Janeway scored on a A.J. Valentine run batted in ground out for the 2-0 lead.

The Vipers responded in a huge way in the bottom of the inning with six runs and a 6-2 advantage. Travis Drader started the inning with a double and Colin Moro followed with his second long ball of the season. Jorge Mejia singled, Duncan reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second base on a throwing error by second baseman Hector Bernal, and scored on a Felix Jose RBI single. After a Nelson Castro walk, Miller drilled his 14th homerun of the season to cap the scoring in the frame.

Right back responded the Scorpions in the top of the fourth inning with a Ryan Barba triple, Hale being hit by pitch, and a Rich Janeway three run homerun to cut the lead down to 6-5.

A run was scored by the Snakes in the bottom of the inning as Moro doubled and scored on two wild pitches for the 7-5 lead.

The game became tied at seven in the top of the fifth with a Jeremy Cleveland single and a Bernal two run big fly.

Yuma took their second lead of the game in the top of the sixth inning as they loaded the bases on singles from Henry Calderon and Valentine, and a walk to Maikel Jova. Cleveland followed with his team's fourth homerun of the game, a grandslam, to make the score 11-7.

Two more runs were added in the top of the seventh as the scoring continued when again Yuma loaded the bases on singles by Pete Farina and Barba, and a walk to Hale. Calderon cashed in two runs with a base hit for the 13-7 advantage.

In the bottom of the ninth the Vipers mounted the huge comeback rally starting with a Jorge Tang single and walks to Mejia and Duncan to load the bases. Jose also walked to bring in a run, Castro knocked in two with a base hit, and Miller stroked his second three run long ball of the game to tie the score at 11.

Miller was back in the action in the bottom of the eleventh with a leadoff double. He reached third base on a Patrick Arlis groundout and scored the game winning run on a wild pitch.

Jon Huizinga (2-2) picked up the victory with two perfect extra innings where he faced the minimum six batters and struck out two. Reggie Rivard also pitched two scoreless frames with two strikeouts while only allowing one hit. Geoff Freeborn pitched a scoreless top of the ninth also out of the bullpen.

This series continues Tuesday July 22nd and Wednesday July 23rd with both games starting at 7:05 PM (MDT). Phil Sobkow (1-2) will start for Calgary on Tuesday and Joe Sergent (2-0) will take the mound Wednesday night.
