Armada split double header
July 21, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Long Beach Armada News Release
Game 1
A great start for the Armada in Game 1 of the doubleheader. It was a pitcher's duel as was expected at Blair Field between Andre Simpson of Orange County and Rik Currier of Long Beach. Simpson went the distance, six innings (doubleheaders go 7 innings in the GBL), and Currier went six for the W as Long Beach wins 4-2 improving their second half record to 3-0. OC falls to 0-3 in the second half.
The bats for Orange County got to Currier quickly in the first, but that was the only time they would get to him. 2B Jermy Acey and 3B Jeff LaRue would drive in the only runs for the Flyers and RF Travon Jackson would add the only other hit going 1 for 3 with a run scored. Simpson (8-3) got the loss going a complete game 6 innings giving up 4 runs, 3 earned on 8 hits, walking 2 and striking out 10.
The Armada bats awoke in the second and third thanks to a solo HR by Ryan Lehr in the second and his base hit RBI in the third. C Octavio Martinez drove a run in the third and fifth. Lehr finished 3 for 3 a triple shy of the cycle with two runs scored. Martinez went 2 for 3 with two RBI's. Martinez, who left in the sixth, is day-to-day with a strained groin muscle trying to steal second in the fifth. DH Chris Klemm went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Currier (5-4) is still undefeated at Blair Field. He went 6 innings giving up 2 runs, 1 earned on 3 hits, walking 3 and striking out 8. Nick Cavanagh is now the saves leader getting number 9 striking out 2.
Game 2
Complete opposite in the second game of the doubleheader at Blair Field. The Armada won a pitchers duel 4-2 in game one and the Flyers won the pitcher duel in game two. The Fleet had the lead 1-0 until a four run sixth for the Flyers gave them the lead for good as they won 4-1 winning their first game of the second half (1-3). Long Beach goes down for the first time in the second half (3-1).
The Orange County bats woke up with all four of their runs coming late in the game. 1B Fernando Pacheco and RF Jeff Van Houten each drove in a run for the Flyers in the sixth inning. 2B Jermy Acey, DH Patrick Breen, 3B Jeff LaRue and Pacheco would each come across the plate in the sixth. CF Travon Jackson went 2 for 3. LaRue also went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
The pitching was outstanding for both sides again in game two. Flyers starter Bob Cramer (3-2) pitched his fourth complete game of the season going all seven innings giving up 1 unearned run on 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 8. Armada starter Ryan Claypool (4-5) pitched great himself going 5 innings giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3. Justin Segal came on in relief pitching 2 innings giving up 2 unearned runs on 2 hits.
Only three hits total for the Fleet as they fell short to Orange County. CF Steve Moss went 2 for 3 driving in the only run for the Armada. 1B Brett Flowers got the other hit going 1 for 3. SS Michael Glomb scored on Moss's single in the third after stealing second for his eleventh steal in just his sixteenth professional game for Long Beach.
Long Beach returns to action for a three game series against the Reno Silver Sox in Reno, Nevada on Tuesday. They will return home for a three game series against the Calgary Vipers on Friday.
