Chico Outlaws News Release

CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA - The Calgary Vipers, fresh from taking a pair from Chico Saturday, did it again Sunday, taking both ends of a doubleheader from the Outlaws, winning the first game 3-1...then breaking open a tight contest with nine runs in the 6th inning to cruise to an 11-1 victory in the nightcap at Foothills Stadium. The two wins helped Calgary complete a four game series sweep.

Game one of the twinbill saw both starting pitchers - Nick Casanova of the Outlaws and Calgary's Nate Melek - go the distance, as both teams combined for just seven hits in the contest. The Vipers took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when Darryl Brinkley doubled, stole third and scored on a Carlos Duncan groundout. In the 3rd Casanova walked both Travis Drader and Colin Moro to lead off the inning...Brinkley smacked a double off the right field wall to score Drader and Jorge Mejia's sacrifice fly plated Moro to put Calgary up 3-0. The Outlaws scored what turned out to be their only run in the 4th when Shane Cronin singled, advanced to third on a Lino Garcia double and came home on a Gabe Riley groundout to make it 3-1...but Melek battled back to limit the Chico offense to just one hit over the final three innings to pick up the complete game victory, improving his season record to 4-2; Casanova (0-2) allowed just three hits in his six innings of work but was saddled with his second straight hard-luck loss.

The second game of the doubleheader featured a battle of lefties, as Chico's Trevor Caughey and Jordy Alexander of the Vipers locked up in a dandy pitcher's duel. Calgary went up 1-0 on a solo homer by Nelson Castro in the 2nd inning...then in the 3rd a two-out error by Jose Valdez kept the inning alive; back-to-back singles by Duncan and Felix Jose plated Moro to put the Vipers up 2-0. Alexander held the Outlaws to just one hit through the first five innings, but in the 6th Chico cut Calgary's lead in half when Steve Boggs tripled and came home on a Jesse Kovacs single. It was still anybody's game heading into the bottom of the 6th, but the Vipers jumped on Outlaws relievers Rudy Quinonez and Rob Ellis to blow open the contest - Jorge Tang's bases-loaded singled plated a pair to make the score 4-1...Brinkley followed with an RBI single...two batters later Duncan singled home two to make it 7-1...Jose then doubled home a run...Nelson Castro added an RBI single to up the lead to 9-1...Drew Miller knocked in a run with a double off the center field wall...then Kevin Price finished up the rally with an RBI groundout to make the score 11-1. P.J. Bevis came on in relief to toss a scoreless 7th inning to lock down the Vipers second straight doubleheader sweep. Alexander (4-3) got credit for the victoy, with Caughey (5-3) taking the loss despite giving up just one earned run in five innings of work.

Sunday's losses dropped Chico to 0-4 in the second half and 15-31 for the year; Calgary improved to 5-2 in the second half and 31-20 on the season. The Outlaws travel to Edmonton Monday to open a three-game series with the Cracker Cats at Telus Field - left-hander Beau Hintz (0-1) gets the start in the opener. First pitch is 6:05pm Pacific time... hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com
