Indianapolis Indians News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio -- First baseman Chris Richard roped a two-run single with two outs in the top of the ninth to cap a seven-run rally and give Indianapolis a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Toledo Sunday evening at Fifth Third Field.
The Indians improve to 44-37, while the Mud Hens fall to 45-38. Indianapolis and Toledo are now tied atop the International League's West Division, one-half game ahead of Louisville.
The Tribe came alive in the ninth, pushing across six runs to take the lead. The Mud Hens pitching staff issued three walks to load the bases. First, LF Rajai Davis beat out an infield single to bring RF Adam Boeve across the dish. Then, CF Chris Duffy drilled a two-run base knock to bring 3B Yurendell de Caster and PR Rich Thompson plateward. DH Raul Gonzalez followed with a single to bring Davis home with the tying run.
Richard capped the scoring spree with a shot through the right side as Duffy and PR Taber Lee trotted home. Richard's two-run single extended his on-base streak to 42 games and hitting streak to 11 contests.
Indianapolis plated its first run in the eighth on Gonzalez's sacrifice fly. All of that came after Toledo dominated the early innings to build a five-run cushion.
The Mud Hens used an Indians miscue to plate three unearned runs in the second. SS Don Kelly reached on an error which allowed 3B Jack Hannahan to score. C Max St.-Pierre followed with a double to right as DH Ryan Ludwick and Kelly came plateward.
Toledo added single runs in the third and fifth. CF Dustan Mohr walked with the bases loaded in the third and LF Ryan Raburn blasted his 15th homer of the season -- a solo shot to left -- in the fifth.
Indianapolis LHP C.J. Nitkowski (1.0 IP, 2 SO) improved to 3-1 with the win, while RHP Matt Whiteside (1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER) notched his 10th save of the season.
Mud Hens RHP Lee Gardner (0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) was charged with a blown save and fell to 2-4 with the loss.
Neither starter -- Toledo RHP Chad Durbin (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 SO) or Indians RHP Jason Roach (5.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) -- factored in the decision.
Davis had two hits for the visitors, while Duffy, Gonzalez and Richard all recorded two RBI in the win. St.-Pierre finished with two hits and three RBI for the home team.
The Indians and Mud Hens return to Fifth Third Field Monday evening at 7 p.m. to conclude the four-game set. LHP Mike Connolly is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while Toledo is expected to counter with RHP Humberto Sanchez.
The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Monday's pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
