Norfolk Tides News Release

Lastings Milledge hit a go-ahead bases clearing double in the bottom of the 6th inning, lifting the Tides to a 5-3 win over the Charlotte Knights in front of 11,071 fans at Harbor Park Sunday night.

With the Knights leading 3-2 in the 6th inning, Knights starter Sean Tracey (6-4) loaded the bases with walks to Jacob Cruz, Chase Lambin and Chris Basak, bringing Milledge to the plate in his first game back with Norfolk after being optioned from New York on Friday. Milledge lined a 2-2 pitch from Tracey into the left-center field gap, plating all three runners to give the Tides a 5-3 lead.

The Tides bullpen of Mitch Wylie (2-2) and Royce Ring kept Charlotte off the board for the final 4.0 innings, helping Norfolk beat Charlotte for the first time in eight outings this season. Wylie allowed just two hits in 3.0 innings of work to pick up the win, and Ring struck out two in a scoreless ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season.

Ring has now thrown 24.0 consecutive scoreless innings in his last 21 outings. The 25-year-old is just one out shy of tying the Tides' franchise record of 24.1 scoreless innings, set during the 2003 season by Orber Moreno.

Charlotte opened up the scoring with single runs in the first three innings off of Tides starter Yusaku Iriki to jump out to a 3-0 lead, but the Tides narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Jeff Keppinger and an RBI groundout by Sandy Martinez.

The attendance of 11,071 was a season-high.

Norfolk and Charlotte are set to square off again Monday night from Harbor Park, with fireworks sponsored by the Virginian Pilot to follow the game. John Maine (3-5, 3.49) is the scheduled starter for Norfolk, while knuckleballer Charlie Haeger (8-2, 1.64 ERA) will take the hill for the Knights. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
