Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Right-hander Marty McLeary fired seven scoreless innings, while Indianapolis exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to post a 6-1 win over Durham Tuesday evening at Victory Field.
The Indians finish the homestand 6-3 and improve to 72-59 with their fifth consecutive win (including the completion of a June 25 contest), while the Bulls fall to 59-72 overall. Indianapolis continues to lead the International League's West Division by two games over Toledo and three games over Louisville.
Indianapolis collected all the runs it would need when 12 men came to the plate in the fourth. The Tribe wasted no time loading the bases with LF Mike Edwards roping a double to left center, DH Raul Gonzalez drawing a base on balls and C Carlos Maldonado reaching on a fielding error.
3B Chris Truby and 1B Yurendell de Caster followed with back-to-back RBI singles to give the Indians a 2-0 lead. RF Adam Boeve then drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the third run, while SS Gookie Dawkins brought home the fourth and fifth with a two-run single and CF Vic Buttler capped the frame with his first Triple-A RBI.
Indianapolis used a balanced attack to record 12 hits in the contest. Buttler led the way with three singles, while Edwards, de Caster and Dawkins registered two base knocks apiece.
McLeary (7.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 SO) picked up the win, improving to 3-4 on the season. McLeary is now 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA (3 ER in 18.0 IP), 21 strikeouts and just two walks over his last three starts.
Durham LHP J.P. Howell (3.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 0 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 5-3.
Bulls CF Darnell McDonald, LF Brent Butler and RF Delmon Young managed two hits apiece in the setback. Durham collected nine hits on the night -- all singles -- but left 10 runners on base.
Durham scored its only run in the eighth when Young reached on an infield single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly.
Indianapolis hits the road for nine games in nine days, beginning with Wednesday's 7 p.m. tilt at Toledo.
RHP Matt Ginter is scheduled to start for the Indians, while RHP Jordan Tata is expected to get the nod for the Mud Hens.
The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Wednesday's pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
