Six-Run Fifth Inning Propels Lookouts to 6-3 Win over Braves

May 24, 2014 - Southern League (SL1)
Chattanooga Lookouts News Release

Coming into tonight's game, Chattanooga Lookouts (19-29) starting pitcher Andres Santiago was looking for his first win of the 2014 season. With the help of a six-run fifth inning, Santiago was finally able to get in the win column as he only allowed two earned runs in 5.2 innings in the 6-3 win over the Mississippi Braves (26-22).

Prior to tonight's start, Santiago's longest outing at home had been five innings. Tonight, Santiago got off to a great start, striking out three Braves in the first three innings. Mississippi was finally able to get to the righty in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with three straight singles. Santiago then yielded a fourth straight single to score the team's first run of the game, but got out of the jam after recording two consecutive outs.

In the bottom of the inning the Lookouts offense came alive when Brian Cavazos-Galvez singled with one out in the inning. The next batter, Noel Cuevas, tripled home the tying run. The offense really began to hit it's stride with two outs in the inning. Darnell Sweeney, Ryan Adams, Jeremy Hazelbaker and Daniel Mayora each hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back singles to increase the team's lead to three. O'Koyea Dickson delivered the decisive blow when he uncorked the team's second triple of the game to bring home two runs.

Mississippi continued to climb back into the game as the night went on. The M-Braves added a run in the sixth inning and one more in the eighth inning to cut the Lookouts lead down to three.

Left-handed pitcher Jarret Martin created a dangerous situation for the Lookouts in the top of the ninth inning when he allowed one hit and walked two to load the bases with one out. Manager Razor Shines proceeded to pull Martin and bring in Thomas who delivered three straight outs to close out the game and earn his first save of the year.

Tomorrow the two team's will face off in the fifth and deciding game of their series. RHP Garrett Gould (1-4, 6.21) starts for the home team against RHP Aaron Northcraft (4-2, 2.70), who was originally slated to start earlier in the series. Sunday's game is set for 6:15 p.m. and is a Fireworks Night at AT&T Field.
