Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL -The Generals (19-29) scored the final four runs of the game Saturday, but it was not enough as they lost 7-6 to the Jacksonville Suns (23-24) in Jacksonville and dropped the series. Dan Paolini (2x5, R), Manny Pina (2x4, 2 R, 3 RBI), and Jack Marder (2x3, R, RBI, BB) each picked up two hits on the night, while Patrick Kivlehan (3x4, R) earned his first three-hit night as a General. But a four-run first by the Suns doomed Jackson.
The Generals have now dropped seven straight series on the year after the winning their first three and are 1-5 in one-run affairs.
Trevor Miller (3-5, 4.56) had a rough first inning for the Generals giving up four runs and faced all nine batters in the inning. The big blows were back-to-back RBI doubles by Joe Benson and Ryan Fisher with two outs in the inning.
Jackson plated a run of their own in the top of the third. Marder scored from second when Ketel Marte's (0x5) grounder to third was not reeled in by Alex Burg. Burg was charged with an error and the Generals had cut the lead to 4-1.
With one out and one on in the bottom of the third, Ryan Fisher hit his fifth home run of the season. The hit increased the Jacksonville lead to 6-1.
Kevin Rivers (1x4, R) reached on an error to lead off the fifth. He came around to score on Marder's fifth double of the season and the Suns lead was cut to 6-2. But Jacksonville regained their five-run lead when Danny Black singled to score Joe Benson in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 7-2.
With two out in the sixth, Pina hit his first Generals home run. The big fly was to the short porch in right field of Bragan Field and made the score 7-3.
Pina came through again in the eighth. He hit a two RBI double to score Paolini and Kivlehan. Three batters later Leon Landry (1x4, RBI) came to the plate with the bases loaded. Landry hit a line drive single to left field and Pina scored easily from third. Mike Dowd tried to score from second, but was cut down out the plate on a nice throw from Suns left fielder Brent Keys. However, the Generals scored three runs in the inning and the Jacksonville lead was trimmed to 7-6 heading to the bottom of the eighth.
Miller suffered the loss for Jackson and fell to 3-5 on the season as he gave up seven runs on eight hits. Justin Nicolino (3-2, 3.56) received the win for the Suns and Jheyson Manzueta pitched an inning and a third to earn his first save of the season. Jackson relievers Nick Hill and Stephen Shackleford combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief behind Miller.
The Generals and Suns wrap up this five game set Sunday at Bragan Field. Jackson will send Cam Hobson (3-3, 3.60) to the bump and the starter for the Suns has yet to be determined. The game is scheduled to start at 6:05 pm and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
