BayBears Stay Hot as Mobile Tops Tennessee 2-1

May 24, 2014 - Southern League (SL1)
Mobile BayBears News Release

KODAK, TN -- Jake Lamb's two-run double in the top of the sixth and RHP Charles Brewer's 7.0 innings of one-run ball is all the BayBears needed to defeat the Tennessee Smokies 2-1 on Saturday night at Smokies Park. The victory is Mobile's third win in the first four games of the series. The BayBears have now won 11 of their last 13 games and with both Mississippi and Montgomery dropping their contest Saturday, Mobile now has a four game lead in the Southern League South Division standings.

Tennessee scored the first run of the game when Kris Bryant hit out his league leading 13th homer of the game in the bottom of the fourth. The solo home run would proved to be the only run the Smokies could plate on seven hits. RHP Charles Brewer (1-0) made his first double-A start for Mobile since 2012 after being transferred from Triple-A Reno and Brewer showed his veteran moxie, limiting Tennessee to just the one run on four hits while walking one and striking out six.

Tom Belza notched two of the BayBears three hits with singles in the third and fifth innings, but it was Jake Lamb's hit that made the difference. In the top of the sixth with one out, Dustin Martin and David Peralta drew back-to-back walks. After Jon Griffin popped out to second, Lamb delivered a two-run double off of the left field wall that plated both runners to give the BayBears a 2-1 advantage.

RHP Jimmy Sherfy worked a scoreless eighth inning and RHP Jake Barrett got the final three outs in the ninth to record his seventh save of the season, preserving the one-run win for Mobile.

The BayBears and Smokies wrap up their series on Sunday at 6:15 PM ET. RHP Mike Lee (3-2, 3.42) makes his tenth start of the year for Mobile against RHP Julio Rodriguez (0-0, 0.00) who makes his first start for the Smokies. Mobile returns home on Monday, May 26 at 4:05 PM CT against the Jackson Generals in the first game of a five game series.
