Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA- Sioux City (30-12) pitched to their advantage on Saturday night as X's starter John Straka (6-1, 2.57 ERA) struck out eleven Canaries hitters in the evening contest. Sioux Falls (18-23) starter Miguel Pena (5-3, 2.57 ERA) held his own on the mound as he threw seven innings on seven hits and gave up two earned runs as the Birds' dropped game two by a final of 6-1 at Lewis and Clark Park.
It was a pitcher's duel early on in the first three innings as both pitchers threw up zeros on the scoreboard. Sioux City answered first as they tallied five runs in the bottom of the fourth that stemmed from a Vickash Ramjit error. Pena kept the Explorers off the scoreboard in the final three innings that he worked on the mound. Sioux City did pick up another run in the top of the eighth when Tommy Mendonca drove in Noah Perio Jr. on an RBI single. Mendonca paced the X's offense by going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
For Sioux Falls, runs came at a premium on Saturday night. The Canaries scored only one run in the top of the eighth when Brian Humphries advanced to first on an error by the first baseman that allowed Tyler Shover to score. There were no Canaries batters that had more than one hit. Brian Humphries did hit a ground rule double in the top of the fourth. In all, the Birds' struck out 13 times combining for 23 strikeouts in the past two games.
Sioux Falls will look for redemption in game three on Sunday, as they send Omaha, NE native Stephen Bougher (2-0, 4.50 ERA) to the mound. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 PM on AM 1230 and FM 98.1 KWSN as the "Voice of the Canaries" JJ Hartigan will bring you all the action live from Lewis and Clark Park.
