Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

After the Sioux City Musketeers went ahead Saturday at Tyson Events Center, the Waterloo Black Hawks were never able to draw back even in a contest which ended 4-3.

The scoreless stalemate was broken with 56.4 seconds remaining in the first period when Sioux City's Sam Kurker cut to the net through the left circle and batted the rebound of his initial shot under the crossbar from just outside the crease.

The Musketeers then went ahead by two during a power play 3:01 into the second period, when Joel Janatuinen was given the puck with room to work just outside the crease and flipped a shot past the stick side of Cale Morris.

Sustained pressure in the Sioux City zone allowed Tom Novak to get a goal back for Waterloo not quite four minutes later, stuffing in a chance at 6:51. However, Sioux City reassumed a two-goal lead at 10:59 on a redirection by Ryan Walker.

Waterloo won the third period, but could never tie the game. Just 1:45 after intermission, Ronnie Hein brought the Hawks within one, putting in the rebound of an Alec McCrea shot. However, a turnover at the Waterloo blue line midway through the period allowed Adam Johnson to score an unassisted goal at 9:17. Sioux City made a costly turnover of their, keying Novak's second goal of the night when he was left alone between the circles at 14:20.

Cam Gornet snuffed out the Hawks remaining chances and hope for overtime, finishing his night with 36 saves. Morris made 29 stops.

Next weekend, the Hawks play three games in three days, beginning Friday with the only trip of the season to meet the Madison Capitols. Saturday and Sunday, Waterloo is back at home to host the Tri-City Storm.
