Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms (19-13-5) fell to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 5-0, on Saturday night. Despite the final score, the Phantoms controlled the momentum throughout most of the contest, as the Phantoms outshot Cedar Rapids, 46-22, on the night.
Cedar Rapids opened up the scoring 13:51 into the opening period when Jiri Fronk beat Phantoms goaltender Chris Birdsall, giving the RoughRiders a 1-0 lead.
Cedar Rapids' lead held up throughout the remainder of the period, and the Phantoms continued to pepper RoughRider goaltender Ryan Larkin with shots, however they were not able to find the back of the net.
Cedar Rapids received two more in the second from Cal Burke and Andrew Oglevie, putting the RoughRiders up, 3-0, after 40 minutes.
The Phantoms continued to get a plethora of scoring chances in the third period, however empty net goals from Fronk and Burke late in the period sealed the 5-0 win for Cedar Rapids.
"I loved our performance tonight, and I thought we were the better team," said Phantoms Head Coach Anthony Noreen. "Credit their goaltender and special teams, but I thought outside of a couple of chances here and there, they didn't get much, and that's as good of a team we're going to play all season."
Birdsall stopped 17 of the 20 shots he faced in the win, while the power play struggled for the second night in a row, going 0-for-4 on the night.
"If we're going to go down, that's how we want to go down. We want teams to leave here knowing they played us, and I think Cedar Rapids is leaving here knowing they played Youngstown," said Noreen.
The Phantoms hit the road for three games in three days next weekend, starting Friday night in Muskegon at 7:15pm.
Tickets are on sale for all Phantoms home games at the Covelli Centre starting at the low price of $10.75 for single game tickets.
