Wichita Wingnuts News Release
FARGO, ND- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 3-2 in the rubber game of their three-game series at Newman Outdoor Field on Thursday night.
Nick Singleton delivered seven terrific innings to earn his 10th win of the year. With the win, Singleton also passed Brad Davis to become the Wingnuts' franchise leader in victories with 17.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Juan Richardson led off with a single to right-center field. Josh Workman hit a groundball to second that resulted in a force at second base. Workman took second base however, when Zach Penprase's relay to first bounced out of play. Jorge Delgado drove in Workman with a double down the left field line to cut the RedHawks' lead to 2-1.
In the fifth, Gerardo Bustamante drew a leadoff walk against RedHawks' starter Kevin Light. Jose Duran was next and singled on a shallow flyball to right. With runners on first and second and no outs, Light was relieved by left-hander Joe Harris. After Mike Conroy laid down a sacrifice bunt, Josh Horn was intentionally walked to load the bases. Harris then walked Juan Richardson to force in the tying run.
Peter Barrows finished the Wingnuts' comeback with a long home run down the left field line with one out in the top of the sixth to make it 3-2.
Singleton allowed two earned runs on just five hits over seven innings for the win. Following an RBI single from Nic Jackson in the bottom of the third, Singleton recorded 13 consecutive outs to give the Wingnuts a chance to comeback. Singleton struck out five and walked one.
Marcos Tabata worked a perfect eighth inning to set up closer Josh Dew. Dew retired the first two hitters in the ninth and then worked around a two-out single by striking out C.J. Retherford to end the game.
Harris took the loss, allowing one earned run on four hits in four and one-third innings.
Light took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs in four-plus frames. Light gave up five hits, walked two, and struck out two.
Fargo's first run came on a bloop single from Jesse Hoorelbeke with two outs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Wingnuts now have 24 games left on their 2011 schedule and trail the Gary SouthShore RailCats by 3.0 games in the Central Division. The Wingnuts' trail the St. Paul Saints and Winnipeg Goldeyes by 2.0 games in the wild card race. All four teams have played 76 games this season.
