Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
EL PASO, Tx.---Shreveport-Bossier found themselves trailing the El Paso Diablos 7-0 Wednesday night when the game was called due to rain in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Captains their second straight loss at Cohen Stadium.
Diablos first baseman Javier Brito went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, two runs a home run and a double. Right fielder Brian Joynt added two hits for El Paso. The Captains managed just five hits off El Paso starter Scott Hodson (3-6). Bryan Sabatella had the only multiple hit night for the Captains, going 2-for-3 with a double.
El Paso got on the board when Brito launched his sixth home run of the year over the left field wall against Captains starter Josh Strawn in the bottom of the first. Maikol Gonzalez and Albenis Machado started the inning with singles to get on for Brito's three-run shot.
Strawn would throw four scoreless innings until Diablos catcher Alberto Espinosa hit an RBI double to score Brito in the sixth and make it 4-0.
In the seventh, Johan Garcia singled to start the inning. Gonzalez reached on an error by Captains second baseman Mike Provencher. Machado moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt.
Then with Nelson Teilon at the plate, Strawn threw a wild pitch that ricocheted off the backstop and bounced right back to Captains catcher Scott Thomas. Garcia was caught halfway between third and home and was in a rundown when third baseman Andres Rodriguez's throw back to Thomas bounced off Garcia's helmet, scoring the runner on the error. Teilon would reach on an error by Captains first baseman Uriak Marquez and score one batter later when Brito doubled against Jake McCarter.
Strawn went 6.1 innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) and eight hits while walking two and striking out two.
Hodson held the Captains scoreless on five hits through seven innings, walking none and striking out three.
With the loss, Shreveport-Bossier falls to 35-40 on the year and 8.5 games back in the American Association Wild Card race with 25 games remaining.
Shreveport-Bossier looks to salvage the final game of the series Thursday night when they send righthander Robert Bono (0-0, 0.00) to the mound to make his first start of the year against El Paso's Alex Kaminski (4-2, 5.96). First pitch is at 7:05 local time.
