Simmons, Scarpetta Lead Revs to Fifth Straight Win

September 8, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

James Simmons homered twice and Cody Scarpetta earned his first win with the York Revolution, combining on a shutout in a 7-0 victory over the Somerset Patriots in the opening game of a six-game road trip on Tuesday night at TD Bank Ballpark. The win is the fifth consecutive victory for the Revs, matching their longest winning streak of the season.

Coming off a four-game sweep at home against Bridgeport that saw the Revs pull off dramatic late-inning victories and comebacks every night, no comeback was needed on Tuesday as the Revs embarked on another big offensive night right away.

Eric Patterson ignited things with a great game-opening at-bat, slashing a double to left-center to start the contest. Wilson Valdez sacrificed Patterson to third, and he quickly came home on a sac fly to right by Andres Perez who picked up his league-leading 76th RBI of the season for an instant 1-0 lead.

It remained that way until the fourth when Brandon Boggs led off the inning with a solo homer to left-center, his 12th of the season, adding to his club record for home runs by a switch hitter.

Simmons then led off the fifth inning with a home run to dead center field, increasing the lead to 3-0.

The Revs punctuated their effort at the plate with a four-run sixth inning. Boggs led off with a single to center, reaching safely for the 10th time in 12 plate appearances over the last three games. Bryan Pounds then blooped a single to shallow right to put two runners on. Telvin Nash smacked an RBI double down the third base line, and with one out, Luis De La Cruz drilled a sac fly on a line drive to left. Simmons capped the outburst with a towering two-run homer to left-center, his second of the night, ballooning the lead to 7-0.

Scarpetta (2-5, 1-1) earned his first win with York, allowing just two hits over six-plus innings. The righty allowed just a first inning single by Aharon Eggleston and a fifth inning single by Ricky Claudio, and struck out four while working around four walks.

Tony Pena retired all six batters to log two innings out of the York bullpen, while Stephen Penney closed it with a scoreless ninth, striking out the final two after allowing a walk and an infield single.

Patriots starter Matt Zielinski (7-3) entered the game with the league's third-lowest ERA (2.32) but absorbed his first loss since July 31, charged with all seven runs in six innings. The run total eclipsed his previous season-high of five runs allowed, also against York on May 24 at Santander Stadium. It marked just the third time in 23 starts the lefty has allowed more than three earned runs.

Notes: Simmons entered Tuesday's game with just one home run on the season. It was Simmons' first two-homer game since July 31, 2012 at York as a member of the Bluefish. It marks the second straight game with a multi-homer performance by a Revs batter as Pounds went yard twice in Monday's victory. Simmons is now 7-for-12 with two doubles, two homers, and five RBI in the last three games. The shutout victory is the fifth of the season for the Revs and the first since July 29 at Southern Maryland. The Revs combined on a three-hitter after tossing a combined two-hitter in Saturday's win. The five-game winning streak matches a season-high set July 24-29. Boggs (2-for-3) now owns a team-best eight-game hitting streak. Nash has an RBI in six straight games. With three home runs, the Revs have now hit 100 long balls on the season, second most in the league. York also has a league-best 18 home runs as a team in just eight games in September. The Revs improve to 33-24 in the second half, a season-high nine games over .500. York remains 4.5 games behind Lancaster for first place, with both teams currently on five-game winning streaks. York lefty Logan Williamson (7-11, 4.08) will face Somerset right-hander Will Oliver (4-1, 2.92) on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
