Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(York, PA- September 7, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (27-30, 53-74) were defeated by the York Revolution (32-24, 56-70) 8-7 on a walk-off single by former Bluefish James Simmons off Patrick Mincey on Monday night to complete a four-game series sweep at Santander Stadium. Bridgeport has now lost six consecutive games, the last five having taken place on the road trip with the home team coming to the plate for their last offensive opportunity.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Robert Carson registered a no-decision, tossing four and one-third innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, walking four, striking out two, and surrendering two home runs. York Starting Pitcher Frank Gailey also did not factor in the game's final outcome, lasting six innings, giving up five runs on six hits, walking one, striking out six, and throwing a wild pitch. Ron Schreurs (4-0) picked up the victory in relief with two scoreless innings of work, striking out one. Patrick Mincey (1-1) suffered the loss, facing seven batters in one-third of an inning, allowing four runs on four hits, walking one and hitting one batter.
Bridgeport took the early 3-0 lead off Gailey in the top half of the second inning on a two-run single by Juan Martinez, scoring CJ Retherford and Andres Rodriguez, and a run-scoring base knock off the bat of Ethan Chapman, plating Martinez. Martinez was just acquired yesterday in a trade with Amarillo of the American Association. The 'Fish would add a pair of runs in the third on an RBI triple by Welington Dotel, bringing home Josh Prince after he led off the frame with a walk. Dotel would later score on a wild pitch from Gailey, and just like that the visitors were up 5-1. Dotel picked up his 12th three-bagger and 48th extra-base hit, both tops overall in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
York scored three runs in the middle innings to get back to within a single run at 5-4, but the Bluefish added a pair of runs in the seventh for a 7-4 cushion as Josh Prince was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Martinez, and Chapman would later cross the plate on an error by Eric Patterson on a ground ball hit by Dotel. That was where the score stood moving to the home half of the ninth inning, as York was in search of a dramatic comeback off Mincey. Andres Perez began the rally with a leadoff single, and Brandon Boggs reached with a walk to put runners at first and second and nobody out. Bryan Pounds singled to load the bases, and the winning run was at the plate in the person of of Telvin Nash, who was hit by a pitch to cut the deficit to 7-5. Salvador Paniagua followed with a game-tying two run single, and in the blink of an eye it was 7-7. After a Nick Ferdinand sacrifice bunt moved pinch-runner Mikey Reynolds to third, the potential winning run was just 90 feet away. Simmons completed the unthinkable comeback with a walk-off single to right field plating Reynolds, and the celebration was on for the home faithful. Dotel led the way for the Bluefish with a pair of hits.
Bridgeport returns to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday, September 8th when they welcome in the Sugar Land Skeeters for a three-game midweek series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Come out to watch a Grandma Beauty Pageant in honor of Silver Sluggers Program.
