
Silvertips Win in Shootout

The two western conference heavy-weights went head to head for a second time this weekend. Everett came out on top of Vancouver by a final decision of 6-5 after a shoot out. This was the fourth meeting of six during the regular season and the Silvertips are a perfect 4-0 against the Giants. Everett, still number one overall and first in the US Division, now has 74 points and a 36-7-0-2 record. Vancouver, leading the BC Division, has 68 points and a 30-10-3-5 history.
Everett opened up the scoring in the game midway through the first period with two fast goals, twelve seconds apart. Ondrej Fiala, earning his sixth on the year at 10:07, wristed in a shot top shelf. At 10:19 Gutierrez followed suit, earning his 26th tally of the season and pushed the Silvertips up to a 2-0 lead. Vancouver got on the board at 15:57 after Leland Irving mis-played the puck. Michal Repik received credit for the goal.
In the second the Giants tied it up and quickly took the lead in the first two and a half minutes. At 1:26 Wacey Rabbit caught a rebound to tie it up at two a piece. Fifty-five seconds later J D Watt made it a 3-2 game. At 5:34 Dan Gendur posted his 11th goal of the season after he walked the puck in, unassisted. Eleven minutes later Peter Mueller wristed in his 11th tally of the year while Everett had an extra man advantage. Then at 19:21, Brendan Mikkelson tied it up at 4-4 to close the middle stanza.
In the third, at eight minutes, J D Watt earned his second on the night after he sent the puck behind Irving to make it 5-4. Seven and a half minutes later, at 15:33, Zach Hamill evened up the scoreboard at 5-5 while the Silvertips were on a 5-on-3 power play. Regulation play ended with both teams having five goals a piece.
Following a scoreless five minute overtime period the game progressed into a shoot out. Brennan Sonne earned the game winning shoot out goal to finish the scoring at 6-5. Sonne, this season, is now 5/7 in shoot out goals.
Posting assists for tonight's game were Peter Mueller with two and Ondrej Fiala, Jesse Smyke, Damir Alic, Matt Strong and Jason Fransoo all with one a piece. Leland Irving took the net for the third time this weekend. After making 33 saves on 38 shots he pumps his record up to 21-4-0-2. Tyson Sexsmith, the Giants' netminder, stopped 14/19 shots but falls to 19-7-2-4. On the extra man advantage in tonight's game Everett capitalized on 2/5 while Vancouver converted on 1/6. The Silvertips were out shot by their opponents 38-20.
Everett is back home Wednesday, January 24th, where they will host the visiting Portland Winterhawks. The puck drops at 7:05pm.
