After Moises Gutierrez scored four of the five Everett goals in tonight's game, the Silvertips came out ahead of the Portland Winterhawks by a final score of 5-3. This was the seventh meeting of ten and Everett leads the series 6-1. Sitting a top the US Division the Silvertips now have 76 points and a 37-7-0-2 record. Portland, bringing up the rear of the US Division, has 30 points and a 14-31-1-1 record.
The Winterhawks were ahead by a score of 3-1 after the opening stanza closed. Teegan Moore scored first at 1:57 with the assist coming from Nick Hotson. At 6:40, on a power play, Gutierrez scored his first of four after he pushed the puck into the net through traffic. Zach Hamill and Kyle Beach assisted Everett's lone first period goal. Portland came back to score two unanswered goals. They took a 2-1 lead at eight minutes after Viktor Sjodin stuffed the puck past Leland Irving. Then at 19:45 Nick Hotson tallied a power play marker to give the Winterhawks a two goal cushion.
From the second period on it was all Everett. At 6:59 of the second, on another power play, Gutierrez caught a rebound and flipped the puck past Kurtis Mucha. Then at 8:18, again with an extra man advantage, he earned his second hat trick of his career while he waited on the doorstep. The second period closed with the scored tied up at three. Peter Mueller assisted on both goals while Hamill and Taylor Ellington also posted assists.
In the final period Dane Crowley and Gutierrez nailed the coffin shut on the Winterhawks. Crowley's tally, at 14:32, came from the right point after he received the puck off of a face off. Gutierrez's goal, his fourth on the night, came late in the period after he put one home while the Silvertips had a 5-on-3 advantage. Damir Alic, Beach and Mueller all assisted Everett's final two markers.
In goal Leland Irving earns the win after he turned away 25/28 shots. His record rises to 22-4-0-2. Kurtis Mucha, Portland's netminder, played an extremely solid game and turned away a mouth-dropping 50 shots on 55. Despite his effort he earns the loss and falls to 14-24-1-1. On the power play Everett converted on 4/12 while the Winterhawks scored on 1/6. The Silvertips out shot their opponents by a margin of 55-28 in the hockey game.
A couple franchise records were broken in tonight's game. Gutierrez is the first Silvertip player to score four goals in one game. And with Everett's 55 shots, they break their previous record of most shots during a game from their previous number of 40.
These two teams meet once again for match number eight on Friday, January 26th. The puck drops at 7:30pm at the Memorial Coliseum.
