September 5, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release

Rookie defenseman Ryan Murray recorded three assists and Kent Simpson stopped 21 of 22 shots as the Everett Silvertips skated to a 5-1 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds Saturday night at Comcast Arena. With the win, Everett improved to 2-0 in the preseason and set up a tournament championship game against the Portland Winterhawks Sunday evening at 7:00 pm.

Seattle jumped on the scoreboard first as Branden Troock scored from the right circle 5:42 into the game.

Everett responded late in the period when a deflection off a Josh Winquist shot found its way onto Markus McCrea's stick; McCrea buried the puck into the open net for the equalizer at 18:28.

Seattle replaced Calvin Pickard with Kyle Jahraus midway through the second period and Everett immediately greeted him with a Kellan Tochkin deflected goal off a shot from the top of the left circle by Murray at 10:35. Murray added his second assist on a poor Seattle line change as he fed Dale Hunt, who pushed the puck up to D. Jay McGrath on the right wing. McGrath snapped the puck past Jahraus from the outside of the right circle at 16:05.

The ‘Tips added two more goals in the third period when Murray fed a beautiful pass in front of the net to a wide open Corey Tyrell, who redirected the puck past Jahraus at 9:23. Josh Winquist completed the scoring by parking himself in front of the net and roofing a Ryan White feed up high at 18:39.

Everett faces off against the Portland Winterhawks, who are also 2-0 in the preseason tournament, Sunday evening at 7:00 pm.
