Spokane Chiefs News Release
Johnny Lazo's second goal of the game with just 43-seconds remaining in a 3-3 tie pushed the Tri-City Americans to a one goal win over the Spokane Chiefs on Saturday afternoon. The Chiefs are now 0-2 in the preseason with their third game in as many days coming up at 3:00 on Sunday against the Seattle Thunderbirds.
Matt Marantz, an 18-year-old rookie from Calgary, Alberta, scored for the second straight game while defensemen Eddie Friesen and Brenden Kichton also had goals for the Chiefs.
Tri-City's Brendan Shinnimin gave the Americans a 1-0 lead at 10:27 of the first and Lazo made it 2-0 at the 4:36 mark of the second. Friesen, a 19-year-old rookie, pulled the Chiefs within one with Spokane's lone power play goal on four chances.
Marantz's unassisted marker at 1:04 of the third evened the game at two. Veteran American Kruise Reddick put Tri-City back on top at 9:30 before Kichton tied it again at 13:21. Lazo's game winner was the third on the power play for Tri-City in eight opportunities.
Rookie 17-year-old Chase Martin made 28 stops for Spokane, including 14 in the third period. Martin was the Chiefs fifth round selection in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft. Tri-City outshot Spokane 32-25.
