Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - The Everett Silvertips have officially tapped Ty Gibson, Kaden Hammell, Ben Hemmerling and Austin Roest as alternate captains for the 2023-24 season.
"Each of our four alternate captains have different leadership qualities that will work together nicely," commented general manager and head coach Dennis Williams. "They'll be relied on to work with our coaches and mentor younger players in that locker room. We feel having two guys up front in Ben and Austin, and two defensemen in Ty and Kaden balances well. They put a lot of games in, they understand how we want our team to play and the expectations that we have for them."
Gibson, an '03-born Victoria, B.C. native, joins the Silvertips' leadership group for the first time in his career. The longest-tenured player on the team, Gibson debuted with the team during the 2019-20 season and has appeared in 152 career games on the blueline since. Over the last two seasons, he has played in 144 of 147 possible games between the regular season and playoffs. Gibson earned the "Most Dedicated" award at the 2023 Team Awards ceremony last season.
Hammell, an '05-born Langley, B.C. native, is entering his first full season with the Everett Silvertips. He made an immediate impact since coming over from the Kamloops Blazers at last year's trade deadline, skating in 31 games for the Tips and accumulating 16 points. He played in every eligible game last year, co-earning the team's Iron Man Award at the Silvertips Team Awards last year. The defender was drafted 148th-overall in the fifth round by the Seattle Kraken in the 2023 NHL Draft last summer.
Hemmerling, an '04-born Sherwood Park, AB native, enters his second season in the captaincy group. The 2022 Vegas Golden Knights draftee has skated in 134 career games since 2020-21, posting 116 points in the process. He was given the Coach's Award at the Team Awards ceremony last season, having netted 21 goals with 41 assists in 55 games played during the 2022-23 campaign.
Roest, an '04-born Coldstream, B.C. native, is in his second season as a member of the Silvertips' leadership group. Drafted this offseason by the Nashville Predators 175th-overall, Roest has logged 118 career points in 142 games played over three WHL seasons. He was named the team's Most Improved Player in 2022-23, blossoming on the statsheet with a 32 goals and 46 assists in 60 games played. He added on four goals and an assist in five postseason games last year.
The 2022-23 captaincy group in Everett included Jackson Berezowski serving as captain with Roest, Hemmerling, Olen Zellweger, Ryan Hofer and Aidan Sutter wearing the "A" throughout the season.
